Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DUCKET W. GATRELL, OF WEST UNION, WEST VIRGINIA.
COMBINED BOOT-JACK AND STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,054, dated November 30, 1880.
Application filed October 26, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DUcKnT'W. GATRELL, of West Union, in the county of Doddridge and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Boot-Jacks and Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of my boot-jack and stand, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to a combined stand and boot-jack; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Upon a stand of any ordinary or desired construction I journal within the top end pieces a shaft having an ornamental wheel or the like upon each end outside the end pieces and rigid with the shaft. From the top and one side rail I construct a frame having a socket, which socket receives a spring-catch in the heel of the jack, which has ordinary jaws on the other extremity. The jack is rigid with a shaft journaled in or near the foot-pieces, and may be closed up out of the way under the stand at will when not in use.
The spring-catch being liberated, the jack falls down. The person places the heel of his boot in the jaws of the jack and his hands upon one or both of the ornamental wheels upon the top ends, and turns the shaft until the pendent toe-piece is in proper position. By this construction the operator has his hands ready for use to steady the stand while his body is in easy and graceful posture.
The stand may be of any kind or size, of the ordinary height of a light-stand, or of a height to allow of it being used as a bootblacking foot-stand, and the means of fastening may be of any desired kind Without depart-ing from the principle of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the ordinary stand; B, the shaft, journaled in the upper end pieces thereof near or at the center and b, the ornamental wheels thereon, rigid with the shaft.
0 represents the pendent toe-lever, which is rigid with the shaft, and has a recess, 0, adapted to receive the toe of the boot.
D represents the lock-frame, and d the latchsocket.
E designates the jack-shaft, journaled at e in the foot-pieces; and F, thejack, having springcatchfat one end and the jack-jaws f at the other.
The operation of my device is obvious.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combined boot-jack and stand herein described, consisting of the stand A, shaft B, having ornamental wheels b and pendent toepiece 0 c, the lock-frame D d, shaft E, and jack F f, having spring-catch f, all constructed, arranged, and combined as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DUOKET WELLS GATRELL.
