Be it known that l, FRANK G. MOCOLLUM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Detachable Shoe-Heels, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to detachable heels for boots and shoes and has for its object the provision of a means whereby a composite heel may be attached to or detached from the shoe and the various heel lifts varied at the will of the operator.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.

Uf the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a portion of the rear part of a shoe showing a heel embodying the features of this invention applied thereto, a portion of the inclosing band being broken away. Fig. 2 represents an inverted plan of the heel part of the sole showing a permanent lift secured thereto. Fig. 3 represents a plan of the outer detachable heel lift. Fig. 4; represents a plan of one of the filling members. Fig. 5 represents a transverse section of a portion of the shoe, the cutting plane being on line 5-5 on Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a transverse section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 6-6 on Fig. 1. Fig. 7 represents a plan of the inclosing band, a portion of the same being shown in section, and Fig. 8 represents one of the clips used to retain the various lifts together.

Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

ln the drawings, 10 represents a sole and 11 an upper of a shoe of any well-known construction to which is permanently secured the heel lift 12. This heel lift 12 is provided with a plurality of shouldered members such as the headed pins 13 and the top or outer heel lift 14 is provided with similar shouldered members such as the headed pins 15. When the heel is to be made up and applied to the shoe a plurality of filling members 16 are interposed between the lifts l2 and lll. These filling members may be made of any suitable material, as,

for instance, of leather, as indicated in Fig. t, or of cork, as indicated at 16a in Fig. 6, or of rubber, as indicated at 16b in Fig. 6.

lVhen the necessary number of lillin g members have beeninterposed between the lifts 12 and 14:, the clips 17 are placed in position with the slotted ends 18 straddling the` headed pins 13 and 15 of the top and bottom lifts 12 and 111 respectively, thus preventing the lifts from becoming separated. rlhese clips 17 are made of flexible metal suliiciently thin to permit an ordinary amount of spring. Both of the filling members of cork and rubber are suiiiciently yielding to give considerable spring while, when corlr is used, the heel is considerably lightcned.

ln order to retain the clips 17 in position and prevent lateral displacement an inclosing band 19 is provided, said band having inwardly extending ears 2O which project into the heel above the upper filling member 16a so that the band is properly positioned, the ends of this band being provided with a suitable locking device 21 which connects the ends together and retains the band in position when the heel is made up. This band 19 not only prevents the displacement of the elias 17 and the separation of the various lifts but it also covers up the edges of the filling members which may be cut out by hand by the wearer and left unnished. The band 19 is made of flexible metal which yields under the weight of the wearer of the shoe and thus gives a certain amount of spring to the heel when in use.

lt is obvious that by such a construction as is herein set forththe heel may be readily altered by the wearer to suit various conditions of weather.

Should the outer lift when made of leather become worn on one side these outer lifts of the two shoes may be interchanged so that the lifts will be worn down evenly and the wearer may also lreep on hand an outer lift made of rubber and replace the outer lift of leather with a rubber lift when desired.

As the filling members are hidden from View by the band 19 they may be cut out roughly from any suitable material by the wearer and dispense with the necessity of taking the shoes to a repairer, thus avoiding the delay which would naturally ensue.

The combination with the sole of a boot or shoe; of a heel lift permanently secured thereto and provided with members having heads forming shoulders a slight distance from the face of said lift; a second liit also provided with members having` heads forming shoulders a slight distance from the face ot' said lift; a iilling member interposed between said lifts; a plurality of clips each extending from a shouldered member on one lift to a shouldered member on the other lift; and a thin yielding metallic band surrounding said iilling member and retaining said clips in position, one end ot said band being provided with a spring tongue adapted to extend into an opening in the other end of said band.

5. The combination with the sole oi a boot or shoe; of a heel lift permanently .secured thereto and provided with headed pins; a. second litt also provided with headed pins; a tilling member interposed between said lifts; and a plurality ot' removable clips extending from one set of headed pins on one lift to the other set of headed pins on the other lift.

6. The combination with the sole oi a boot or shoe; oi a heel litt permanently secured thereto and provided with headed pins; the, heads of which are at a slight distance from said lift; a second lift also provided with headed pins similarly disposed; a filling member interposed between said lifts; and a plurality of removable clips, the ends ol which are provided with slots adapted to straddle said pins and lock the various lifts together.
