In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of a gun wherein is shown in elevation devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same' shown partly in plan and partly in horizontal section. Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevations to illustrate two phases of the action of the invention.- Fig). 5 is a perspective view of the trigger lock. Fi 6 is a like view of the controller block. 5 Figs. 7 and 8, respectively, are similar views of the sears for the right and left hand hammers.
The type of gun illustrated in the drawe known as hammerless as best illustrating the manner of carrying out the invention, though the in vention is equally applicable to the other class or hammer guns, as will be referred to later.
The numeral 10 designates the stock, 11 the bore, and 12 the frame, which may be constructed and arranged as ordinary or in any suitable manner.
13 represents the hammer for the right hand barrel and 14 the hammer for the left hand barrel which hammers are pivoted on or levers, such as 16, see Fig. 1, and are severally provided with main-springs, as 17. For each of the hammers there is a scar which sears are pivoted upon a fixed pin 18 and are arranged to be engaged by sear springs 19 with the respective hammers in notches 13 and 14' therein rovided when such hammers are in cocke condition, as
of which the following is a right hand one 20 has upon its rear arm a finger 20' which is directed inwardly, that 1s, toward-the left hand with respect to the gun barrels; and the left hand sear 21 has a finger 21 directed oppositely or toward ilie rlght and is desirably chamfered, as at 22 is a trigger-block which is fulcrumed in proximit to its front end on a pin 23 and has a trlgger 22 extending downwardly therefrom so as to protrude below the gum stock. Coupled to said block is another block 24, or controller as it will be hereinafterdesignated, which is capable of longitudinal motion with respect to the triggerblock. Such connection is desirably had by 'theprovision of an inverted T-shaped base 24' to the controller which fits in a correspondinglly shaped'way 22" in the triggerblock. xtendlng downwardly from the controller is a lug 24 .to serve as an abutment between which and the rear end of a cavity 22" of the trigger-block is spring 25 serving to press the controller forwardly.
An arm. 24' extends forwardly from the controller and is arranged to have its extremity coact with a cam 13 provided upon one of the hammers so that when the hammer is cooked the controller will be affected -to move the same rearwardly in opposition the finger of the sear 20 in position to be en-' gaged by the space d intermediate the aforesaid notches a and b.
26 is a hook which is pivotally connected to an arm 27 extending upwardly from the trigger-block and .is arranged to have its bill 26 engage the controller in the notch a when the latter is in its rear-most position whereupon the finger 21 of the left hand sear will be in position to be engaged by the controller immediately in front ofsuch notch, as at e. Of said sears the viding a longitudinal slot 28 therein and through which extends said fulcrum pm 23 and a guide pin 29.
30 is a spring serving to normally retain the shifter in its forward inoperative position, and a spring 31 may be employed to yieldingly retain the hook 26 upon occaslon against the top face of the controller or 1n the notch 0 thereof.
The operation of the invention when applied to a hammerless gun 1s as follows: l.n cocking the gun the hammer-cam l3 acting against the arm 24 of the controller 24 forces the latter rearwardly into the position in which it is illustratedinFig. 3 and whereat the finger 20 of the right hand sear will be directly above the controller part d and the finger 21' of the other sear above the notch 0. When this condition prevails it is evident that by tilting the controller upwardly, as represented Flg. l, and through a pull upon. the trigger, that the controller will act against the right hand sear to tilt it and to disengage this sear from the hammer, while the finger 21 of the other sear will not be afiected by the controller. The hammer 13 is thus released and through the influence of the main spring therefor fires the charge in the right hand barrel, and, in so doing, the cam is turned to afiord of suflicient forward movement to thecontroller to'have the notch a, and the art f to the rear of the notch 0 respectively elow the fingers 20' and 21 of the right and left hand sears. Under these circumstances another pull upon the trigger will affect only the'left hand sear to cause the release of the corresponding hammer and result in the discharge of the left hand barrel. When it is desired to fire the left hand barrel prior to the other, the shifter 28 is manipulated to move the controller rearwardly to permit the hook 26 engaging the same in the notch 0,.whereupon the fingers 20 and 21 will be respectively positioned above the notch b, and the part e in advance of the notch 0. The hammers being'cocked, and under such assumed disposition of the controller, a pull upon the trigger will be inert as to the right hand sear, while the left hand one will be affectedto release its hammer during the early part of the tilting movement 0 the controller and the subsequent withdrawal of the hook from the engaged notch by the and the sear finger 20 above the controller part d resulting in the discharge of the right hand barrel when another pull is imparted upon the tri 'ger. From the foregoing it is evidentt at the cocking of the hammers of themselves serve to automaticallyposition the controller so that the right hand barrel will be" discharged throu h the first trigger pull, and a succeeding pu 1 will discharge the other barrel. It 18 furthermore evident thatthe left hand barrel may be first discharged through-the agency of the shifter 28.
With hammer guns the shifter, and the hook 26 for restraining the controller are not required as, where the left hand barrel is to be first discharged, it is onlynecessary to cock that hammer by hand and fire the same while the controller is in its most forward position, and the right hand hammer 1n bemg similarly cocked displaces the controller so as to be positioned to fire the right barrel when the trigger is again pulled, and hence the notch 12 may be omitted in applyin the invention to this class of guns.

A double barrel fire-arm, comprising in combination with the gun hammers, a cam controlled by one of said hammers, a tiltable trigger block having a recess formed therein, a sear for each of said hammers, said sears each having a finger upon its rear end, a controller slidably mounted on the upper face of said block, and having a lug dependin in saidrecess, a spring bearing between sai said recessin said block to slide said controller out of engagement with said cam, and a depending member to lock said arm out of means to render either of said sears o' erative on said hammers as said control er is moved.
3. A double barrel fire-arm, comprising in combination with the gurl hammers, a cam controlled by one of said hammers, a'tiltable trigger block having a recess formed therein, a sear for each of said hammers, said sears each havin a finger upon its rear end, a controller sliablymounted on the upper face of said block, and havinga lug depending in said recess, a spring bearing between said lug and said block to normally maintain said controller in a forward -pos'ition, a forwardly projected arm formed on said controller and in normally operative engagement with said cam, a member projecting and operative in said recess in said block to slide said controller out of engagement with said cam, and a depending member to lock said arm out of such engagement, said controller having a series of recesses formed in its upper face into which said fingers of said sears are adapted to predeterminedly fall as said block is moved in either direction, whereby to render said sears inoperative on said hammers.
4. A double barrel fire-arm, comprising in combination with the gun hammers, a cam controlledby one of said hammers, a tiltable trigger block having a recess formed therein, a sear for each of said hammers, said sears each having a finger upon its rear end, a cont-roller slidably mounted on the upper face of said block, and having a lug dependingin said recess, a spring bearing between said lug and said block to normally maintain said controller in a forward position, a forwardly projected arln formed on said controller and in normally operative engagement with said cam, a member pro ecting and operative in said recess in said block to slide said controller out of engagement with said cam, and a depending member to lock said arm out of such engagement, said controller having means to render either sear inoperative on said hammers 'and said controller sliding member being normally in position to be manually operated.
