SASH FASTENER.
APPLIGATION FILED MAY 21, 1909 950,324. Patented Feb.22, 1910.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
owzwtoz am W. Grodbdus UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE WALTER GRODHAUS, OF FRUITVALE, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VALTER GRoD- runs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fruitvale, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash fasteners and has for an object to provide a fastener of this character that will be extremely simple in construction and which will be so arranged that will permit of its attachment to the lowermost sash of a window frame and which will be provided with a novel means for locking engagement with one of the side bars of the frame of the window to hold the lower sash against sliding movement, and to also provide means of a simple character for'engaging the uppermost sash of the window frame to hold it against sliding movement, thus holding both sashes of the frame in locked position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide means which will permit vertical adjustment of the uppermost sash, the said means also serving to hold the said uppermoislt sash securely locked to the lowermost sas Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better disclosed and it will be understood that changes within the specific scope of the claims can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of a portion of a window frame showing my invention in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the revoluble retaining element.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings there is shown a window frame of ordinary construction provivded with a lower sash 1 and an upper sash 2.
My improved sash fastener is shown at 3 and consists of a base plate 4 provided with a series of passages 5 for receiving screws or suitable fastening devices 6 secured to the top of the lowermost sash 1. The plate 4 is provided at its front end with a laterally Specification of Letters Patent.
extending portion 7 struck at its outer end to form an ear 8 having an eye 9, as shown. The plate 4 has extending therefrom an car 10 disposed in line with the ear 8 and is provided with a passage 11. The passage 9 in the ear 8 has slidably mounted therein a bolt 12 provided with an inwardly extending stem 13 which is slidably engaged in the passage formed in the car 10, and as shown the said stem is provided with a finger manipulating head or portion 14. A coil spring or similar elastic element is disposed between the ear 10 and the inner end of the bolt 12. The bar or side portion 15 of the window frame has formed therein a vertical series of horizontally disposed passages 16, and the spring herebefore described is arranged to hold the bolt normally engaged in one of said passages.
The plate 4, at its outer end is stamped to form a loop or eye portion 17 disposed in line with a loop or eye portion 18 at the lower extremity of a plate 19. The said loops 17 and 18 receive a pintle 20 which provides for the pivotal movement of the plate 19. The plate 19 has extending therefrom at a point adjacent to its upper end a sleeve or tubular portion 20 in which is revolubly mounted a stem or stud 21 provided at its inner end with a manipulating head 22 and at its outer end with a substantially elliptical knife or retaining element 23 having beveled end portions 24 adapted when the stud or pin 21 is revolved in one direction to extend beyond the sides of the sleeve or tubular portion 20. The uppermost sash 2 has formed therein a ven tical series of elongated passages 25 which are disposed in such position that will permit the insertion of the knife or retaining element 23 therein.
In operation when it is desired that the lower sash be held in its lowered position and the upper sash in its raised position, the hinged plate 19 is moved to assume a vertical position to lie against one side of one of the side bars of the uppermost frame so as to cause the knife or retaining element 23 to be disposed in the lowermost passage 25 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. After the knife 23 has been thus inserted in the lowermost passage, the manipulating portion 22 can be revolved manually so that the beveled cutting edges 24 will bite into the side walls of the said slot. This construction effectively holds the plate 19 Patented Feb. 22, 1910. Application filed May 21, 1909. Serial No. 497,519.
against pivotal movement as will be readily appreciated and also serves to hold the uppermost sash against vertical sliding movement. The tendency of the spring or elastic element which is engaged with the bolt 8 serves to hold the latter seated in the lowermost passage formed in the side bar 15 of the window frame and provides means to the desired point at which it is to be adjusted and held after which the plate 19 can be moved into its operative position and the knife or retaining element 23 guided as previously described.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A window frame having a plurality of sliding sashes, said frame having a vertical series of passages formed therein, a sash fastener carried by one of the sashes, a
spring pressed lockin bolt carried by the fastener and adapted for engagement in said passages to hold the lower sash against slid ing movement, a hinged plate carried by the fastener and adapted to be folded to lie thereupon or to be moved vertically to lie in a position at rightvangles to the said fastener, one of said sashes having a vertical series of passages formed therein, anoutwardly extending lug carried by the hinged. plate and adapted to be inserted in either of the passages formed in the said sash, and a rotatable stud carried by the lug and provided with an elliptical retaining element having beveled end portions which when the stud is rotated in one direction are adapted to lie beyond the sides of the said lug and engage with the walls of one of the passages formed in said sash.
2. As a new article of manufacture, asash fastener comprising a base plate, a springpressed horizontally disposed sash engaging bolt upon the base plate, a plate hingedly connected tothe base plate and adapted to be folded to lie thereupon, a lug formed upon the second-named plate and provided with a passage, a rotatably mounted stud in the passage formed in said lug, and an elliptical sash engaging element formed upon the stud and adapted when the stud is moved into its operative position to have its ends extended beyond the sides of the said lug.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
