The invention also provides window, fixtures which admit of both, sashes be'ng fastened when closed andtheijlo'wef sash beng utilized as operating means for the upper sash when it is required to lower or raise the same.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The window frame 1 may be of any design and is provided with upper and lower sashes 2 and 3, respectively. A bracket 4 is secured to the upper portion of the top sash 2 and a rod 5 is connected to the bracket 4 and depends therefrom and extends some distance below the top rail of the bottom sash 3. Fasteners A and B cooperate with the rod 5 and preferably are of like structure. This operation results in a downward 30 movement of the rod 5 and a lowering of the top sash 2 which is connected thereto by means of the bracket 4. After the top sash 2 has been lowered to the required position,
it is held by means of the fastener B which grips or lockingly engages the rod 5. If desired, the bottom sash 3 may now be raised or adjusted to any required position and is made secure by means of the fastener A.
The fasteners A and B are preferably of like formation, hence a detailed description of one will suffice for a clear understanding of both. The fastener comprises a. base portion or frame, a pair of grips and a cooperating spring. The base or frame includes an oifstanding or raised portion 7 and opposed ears 6, the latter being apertured to receive suitable fastening means for securing the device when in position. The base or framemay be cheaply constructed of strap metal cut into required lengths and each of the lengths having its intermediate portion pressed laterally to form the raised portion Transverse slots 8 are formed in opposite end portions of the raised part 7 and receive the shanks 9 of the grips. Each of the grips comprises a shank portion 9 and a cross head 10 at one end of the shank. An opening 11 is formed in the shank for reception of the rod 5. The grips no are received in the transverse slots 8 and are prevented from outward displacement by means of the cross heads 10. When assembling the parts, the shanks 9 of the grips are passed through the slots 8 from the rear side of the base or frame. An expansible helical spring 12 is placed between the pro jecting ends of the shanks 9 in line with the openings 11 formed therein, after which the rod 5 is passed through the openings 11 and the spring 12, thereby completing the fastener. The outer ends of the shanks 9 are pressed apart by means of the interposed spring 12, thereby inclining the grips in opposite directions whereby they bindingly engage the rod 5 and secure the fastener on the rod in the required adjusted position. When the projecting ends of the shanks 9 are pressed together, the grips release the rod 5 and admit of relative move ment between the fastener and rod so that the desired adjustment may be readily effected. When the shanks 9 are released, the spring 12 comes into play and causes the grips to automatically engage the rod 5 and secure the parts in the adjusted position. The construction of the grips is such that they may be stamped or struck up from sheet metal whereby the fastener as a whole may be cheaply and economically manufactured in quantity.
"What is claimed is:
A window fastener comprising a substantially U-shaped bracket having its ends bent at right angles to the arm portions and in opposite directions to each other and adapted to be secured to a frame, said brackets having relatively narrow slots formed at the juncture of the arm portions and the bight portion, elongated finger pieces extending through the slots in the bracket and having lateral projections on their side edges at their inner ends to prevent withdrawal of the finger pieces from the brackets, said fingerpieces having openings arranged exterior of the bight portion of the bracket, a rod extending through the openings and secured to the window sash, a spring on said rod and bearing against said finger pieces and normally maintaining them in rod gripping position, and the edges of said relatively narrow slots forming fulcrums for said finger pieces when the finger pieces are moved toward each other to compress the spring and release the rod.
