Letters Patent No. 95,027, dated sq tember' 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
The schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mag/concern the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relatesto improvements in kerosene and other oil lamps, having for its object to provide lamps not liable to explode;
The invention consists in an improved arrangement of means for conducting the wick through a reservoir of water after having taken up the oil, the said waterreservoir being so interposed between the oil and'the flame as to prevent the generation of gas; also, to prevent'the contact of the flame with the oil-in the reservoir.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved lamp. 7
A represents the oil-reservoir, which is the lower part of a vessel, B, divided by a diaphragm, 0, above which is the water-reservoir 1), out of which the wick-.
tube leads.
.A passage, E, leads from the oil-space A up to a nozzle,F, common to both the reservoirs, and placed in the top of the vessel B.
The dividing-wall G, which separates this passage y from the space D, rises in the nozzle slightly above the top of the vessel B.
- The wick H is placed in the reservoir A, and conveyed up the passage E, over'the wall, through the water, to the wick-tube. It should be saturated with oil previous to filling the water-space. The latter is intended to be kept full, and is an effectual stop to v the passage of the flame into the space containing the oil, or of the gas from the said space to the flame. The water also prevents the generation of gas.
it Having thus described my invention,
' \Vhat I claim as n'ew, and desire to secure by Let- 'tersPatent, is v The oil-reservoir A, water-reservoir D, passage E, elevated dividing-wall G, and nozzle F, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
