Letters Patent No. 80,590, datedfAugust 4,1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N LAMPS.
dite Scintille referat in in tlgsse @tetten latnrt mit milking aan n tin same.
-To ALL WHoM 1T MAY coNcERN:
i Be it known that I, S. C. BROCKINGTON, of Groton, inthe county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and usei'ul Improvementiiu Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the followingis'a full, clear, 'andrexact description thereof,'\vhich will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure l represents anertical sectional view of my improved lamp. Figure 2 is a detail vertical transverse se'ctionoi` the same, taken on the plane ofthe line x x, fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to construct a lamp for kerosene and other hydrocarbon liquids, in which the wick will always be equally far inserted in the liquid, so that thereby a steady and equal flame will alwaysv be obtained.
The object of the invention is also to providean oil-reservoir and connections, by means of which any number of lamps can be supplied with the necessary fuel. Thus, for example, a tank, set up on the upper iloor of a house, may be provided with a series of distributing-pipes, by means of which it will supply any number of lamps, set up in any part of the house. Y
The invention consists chiefiy in arrangingwitliin a lamp-reservoir a float, which, when it rises to 'a certain height in the reservoir, closes a valve, thereby preventing further supply of fuel lto the reservoir. The oil is thusalways kept at an equal height inthe lamp,- and the wick is supplied with an equal' quantity of fuel.
The invention also consists in the combination of a lamp, of the aforesaid construction, with the pipe and tank, in the manner hereinbefore set forth, the pipe having a. `stop-cock, by means of which the supply of oil canbe regulated.
A, in the drawing, represents a tank, made of sheet metal, or other suitablev material, of suitablesize. It is intended to be set up high enough that it will supply, ithrough a pipe orl pipes, B, one or *more lamprcservoirs, C, which are arranged lower than the tank, as shown.
A strainer, a, is or may be formed in the tank, at the mout-h oi each pipe B, or within each pipe B.
l A stop-cock, i), is arranged in eachpipe B,`as shown.
The oil enters the reservoir through thevbottom, as shown.
In the reservoir is arranged a'. iioat, E, from which, by means of a stem, b, a small valve, c, Yis suspended. The iioat is surrounded by a perforated guard, F, as shown. The valve c iits into the pipe B, under a seat, d, formed therein, as is clearly -shown in iig. 1. I
.When the oil flows to the reservoir, through the pipe B, it gradually, as it rises'in the reservoir, raises the float E, and, when it reaches acertain height, the float willbe so high as to bring the valve c against its seat, 02,.
and will thereby automatically prevent the further supply of oil. The wick from the burner is immersed in the oilthat fills the reservoir, and will, by this arrangement, be always immersed to thevsame depth, for, when the contents of the reservoir arebut slightly reduced, the valve will be opened, to let in enough to keep up the same level.
The construction of the burner securedto the reservoir does not form part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patente- 1. The self-acting valve-attachment to lamp-reservoirs, consisting ofthe valve e, attached to a'oatiE. and made and operating substantially as` herein shown and described.
2. The device set forth in the foregoingclause, in combination with the perforated guard F, arranged as shown. l
3. The combination of the lamp-reservoir C with the guard F, oat E, and valve c, and with the pipe B, stop-eock C, and tank A, all made and-.operating substantiallyas' herein shown and described.
The above speciiication of my invention signed by me, this 17th day ofvJunc, 1,868.
` y S. C. BROCKINGTON.
