' v CABLE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 10, 1908. Serial No. 481,866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bartlesville, in the county of Washington and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Cable-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cable clamp, more especially designed for use on well-drilling tools and other devices, and arranged to securely clamp the cable and positively hold the same against slipping.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described herein after and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied to well-drilling tools, the section being on the line 1-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 22 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The casing A of the clamp shown in the drawings is hung on links 13 attached to a yoke C, mounted loosely on the lower end of a temper screw D provided with a handle E for turning the screw, with a view to raise or lower the casing A and the parts supported thereon. On the casing A are mounted to slide freely up and down jaws F provided at their opposite faces with linings F, securely held in place by set screws F and adapted to engage and clamp a cable G; carrying drilling tools or other devices. The jaws F are hung on links H pivotally connected with the free ends of levers I fulcrumed at I on the casing A and pressed on at their under side by springs J set in recesses A formed in the casing A, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. Normally the springs J hold the levers I in an uppermost position, as indicated in Fig. 8, so that the jaws F are lifted and moved apart into an open position, for the convenient insertion of the cable G through the slotted open front plate A of the casing A (see Fig. 2). The upward movement of the jaws F is limited by stop pins K, projecting from opposite sides of the jaws and adapted to abut against the under side of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 3.
After the cable G- is in position between the jaws F, then use is made of a screw clamp L applied to the upper ends of the jaws F, so as to draw the same together with a view to clamp the jaws F with their linings F against the cable G. Now the weight of the cable and the parts attached thereto tends to draw the jaws F downward, and the latter in doing so are swung inwardly toward each other by the action of the links H and the spring-pressed levers I, that is, the linings F of the jaws F are moved in firm contact with the cable G, to securely clamp the latter in place and to hold the cable against slipping. It is understood that when the strain on the cable G is released and the clamp L is removed, then the jaws F swing upward and outward by the action of the springs J on the levers I connected by the links H with the jaws F, the latter in their outward movement disengaging the cable G whenever it is desired to do so.
The linings F are preferably made tapering, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 8, so that when their inner clamping faces are worn, the set screws F are loosened and the linings F are pushed downward, to move the inner faces nearer to each other, thus compensating for the wear and bringing the linings in proper position for engagement with the cable G. The linings F are fastened in place after proper adjustment is made, by the set screws F as previously mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cable clamp comprising a casing, a pair of clamping jaws, levers fulcrumed at one end on the casing, and links connecting the free ends of said levers with the clamping jaws.
2. A cable clamp comprising a casing, jaws mounted to slide freely up and down in the said casing, leversfulcrumed on the said casing, links connecting the said levers with the said jaws, springs held in the said casing and pressing the said levers, and
Patented Feb. 22, 1910 10 casing, links pivoted to the free ends of the 1 levers and to the aWs, andsprings arranged in the recesses of the casing and engaging the under sides of the levers.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES AUGUSTUS BUTLER. Witnesses:
F. M. KINNEY, A. H. HULING.
