IRON CROSS-TIE FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed .TanuarySO, 1908. Serial No. 413,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBERT H001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedarville, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a new Improved Iron Cross- Tie for Railways, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a safe, permanent iron cross-tie for railways, which is of simple and comparatively inexpensive construction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a cross-tie which practically eliminates the necessity of using spikes and bolts, which as is well known, have a tendency to work loose under the continued vibration to which they must necessarily be subjected.
I. accomplish the above objects by the construction shown in the following drawings forming a part of this specification in which Figure l, is a side elevation of the crosstie, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation view partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the bed plate and rail showing locking lug N.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings A represents a metallic bed plate having lugs 0 adapted to engage the outside of the rails. Intermediate of its length the plate A is provided with an apertured vertical boss M and adjacent the lugs 0 is provided with recesses N. for a purpose hereinafter described.
B represents a pair of rail braces provided with lugs (Z, cl at their outer ends similar to the lugs 0 0 formed upon the bed plate A adapted to engage the inner side of the rails. The braces B are provided with lugs upon their under faces adjacent their outer ends as at N which register with the aforesaid recesses N when the parts are assembled and lock the bed-plate A and rail braces B against independent lateral movement. The inner ends of the braces B are formed with raised recessed portions 0 adapted to engage the boss M. Half-round notches are also formed in the inner abutting faces of the portions 0, which form a bolt hole when the bed-plates are placed end to end, through which and the bed-plates the bolt X passes and is secured by nuts P.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An iron cross-tie comprising a bed plate provided at its ends with integral rail-engaging lugs, and at its center with an apertured vertical boss, rail-braces provided at their outer ends with integral rail-engaging lugs and at their adjacent inner ends with raised recessed portions for engagement with said boss, and a securing bolt passing through the apertured boss and recessed portions of the braces.
2. An iron cross-tie comprising a bed plate provided at its ends with integral rail engaging lugs, and at its center with an apertured boss, rail braces provided at their outer ends with integral rail-engaging lugs and at their adjacent inner ends being notched for receiving a securing bolt from beneath throu h the notched portions of said braces.
3. in iron cross-tie comprising a bed plate provided at its ends with integral rail-engaging lugs, and at its center with an apertured boss, said bed late being also provided with recesses ad acent said rail engaging lugs; rail braces provided at their outer ends with rail-engaging lugs and at their adjacent inner ends with raised recessed ortions for engagement with said boss, ugs formed on the under face of the outer ends of said rail braces adapted to register with the recesses in said bed plate to revent independent lateral movement 0 said rail braces and said bed plate, and a securing bolt passing through the apertured boss and recessed portions of the braces.
