PATENT OFFICE.
Jomv W. DOWELL AND WILLIAM T. MORRISON, oF'RosEBURe, OREGON.
COMBINED RAILWAY TIE AND RAIL-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 769,064, dated. August 30, 1904.
Application filed November 21, 1903'. Serial No. 182,154 (No mode 1'0 ctZLwhom it may concern} Be it known that we,'JOHN W. DOWELL and WiLLIAM T. MORRISON, citizens of the United States, residing at Roseburg, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented new'and useful Improvements in a Combined Railway Tie and Rail-Fastening, of which the Figure 1 is a plan view showing rails ar-' ranged upon ties constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig.1; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the top plate of the tie.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is the body of the tie, preferably formed of a block of metal, having a centrallyarranged passage 2 therein for the reception of a bolt 3 or other securing means. A recess 4: is preferably formed in the bottom of the body 1 for the reception of a nut 5 or other device adapted to be engaged by the bolt. A top plate 6 is arranged on the body 1 and has a central aperture 7 for the reception of the bolt 3, whereby said plate is securely fastened to the body 1. 'Inwardly-eXtending ears 8 are arranged at the ends of the top plate 6 and are adapted to fit over the outer base-flanges?) of rails 10 and to fit snugly thereon and against the webs 11 of the rails. These ears are integral with the plate 6 and are so spaced apart that when the rails 10 are engaged thereby they will be located at the proper distances apart. That portion of the plate 6 which is located cent the upper face of the plate.
preferred form of our invention,
between the rails 10 is reduced in width, as shown at 12, and located adjacentthe ends of the reduced portion of'the plateare laterallyextending ribs 13, which are arranged adja- These ribs are adapted to be engaged by fastening-blocks 14, having flanges 15 at their outer ends, which are adapted to project over the inner baseflanges 9 of the rails. These blocks are provided with channels 16 in theirlower faces, which are so shaped as to fit snugly over and underthe beads 13. Each block has a recess 17 in its inner end .forthe reception of the ends. 18 of a locking-plate 19, arrangedupon the top plate 6 and held in place by the bolt 3. The distance between the inner ends of the beads 13 is equal to or greater than the length of the channeled portion of each block 14:.
In. fastening rails upon the'tie herein de- Y thereby bringing the flanges 15 of the blocks in position over the inner base-flanges of the rails. The plate 19 is then inserted between the block 1 1 and fastened to the body 1' by means of the bolt 3. It will be seen that the deviceis'extremely simple and durable in construction and that the parts can be readily assembled.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body; of a top plate detachably secured thereon and having inwardlyextending rail-engaging ears, beads extending longitudinally along the sides of the top plate, rail-engaging recessed blocks embracing the beads, and means for securing the blocks in position upon the top plate.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body; of a top plate secured thereon and having inwardly-extending rail-engaging ears, said plate having its intermediate po'rtion reduced in width, beads arranged longitudinally upon the'sides of the reduced portion, recessed rail-engaging blocks embracing the beads, and means for securing the blocks to the top plate.
3. In adevice of the character described, the combination with a body; of a top plate thereon and having inwardly-extending rail-engaging ears at the ends thereof, longitudinallyextending beads upon the sides of the top plate and adjacent the ends thereof, recessed rail-engaging blocks embracing the beads, and
a retaining-plate secured upon the top plate and between the blocks.
a. In adevice of the character described, the combination with a body; of a top plate thereon and having inward ly-extendin g rail-engaging ears at the ends thereof, longitudinallyextending beads upon the sides of the top plate and adjacent the ends thereof, recessed rail-engaging blocks embracing the heads, a retaining-plate upon the top plate and between the blocks and adapted to project into and engagc said blocks, and means for securing the body, top plate and retaining-plate.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of witnesses.
