Description

(No Model.) v
I'. P. SCOTT.
RAILROAD TIE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK FRANCIS SCOTT, oF HILLISRURG, INDIANA.
RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,938, dated April 13I 1886.
(No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK FRANCIS SCOTT, -a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillisburg, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitlcation, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon. l
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my'invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in railroadties; and it consistsin the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the tie, and B the rails held thereon by the chair-sections C D, the former being` cast with the tie and the latter sections connected thereto by bolts a and nuts b. These bolts extend up through the tie and chair-sections D, and the nuts b engage with the screw-threaded ends of said bolts, and are prevented from turning thereon by a longitudinal key, E, formed of Spring metal. Ihe key E has a dovetail head, c, to engage with a similarlyformed groove, d, in the upper side of the chairsections D, and is inserted through the end of the groove. The dovetail head c of the key E is so constructed with relation to the body of the key `that when in position the key will assume an acute angle from a perpendicular in au outward direction, to prevent binding against the nuts, and also to enable it to be more convenientl y inserted in place. The chair-sections C D overlap the feet of the rail B, and abut against the sides thereof between the feet and tread, and the rail is held firmly from longitudinal displacement by dowel-pins e, connected to the Section D, and extending horizontally and transversely through holes in the rail and chairsection C.
Havingnow fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A railroad-tie cast with chair-sections, as shown, in combination with similarly-formed chair-sections connected to the tie by bolts and nuts, a key provided with a dovetail head inserted in dovetail grooves in said chair-sections, the latter having doWel-pins extending through holes in the rail andlholes in the opposite chair-sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK FRANCIS SCOTT.
