CUP OR HEAD FOR MASSAGE DEVICES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. SIEBERT, JR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cups or Heads for Massage Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of cups or heads for massage devices and has particular relation to that class of cups for massaging machines which is shown in my former patent No. 893,021, issued under date of July 14th, 1908, and in which a flexible disk of yielding material is mounted in the cup or head and adapted to have imparted thereto, a rapid vibratory motion through the influence of an interrupted air current.
The objects of my present invention are to provide a cup of this class wherein is employed improved means for retaining the marginal portion of the rubber or flexible disk, in connection with the body of the head and wherein improved means are provided for relieving the disk from the effects of unnecessary air pressure and for regulating the size of the exhaust or relief passage. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved cup, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the cup or head, and Fig. 3 is an enlargement of a portion of the section shown in Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a cup body 1 of hard rubber, fiber or other suitable material, said body comprising a straight tubular shank portion 2 and an enlarged circular head portion 3, the latter having the greater portion of its periphery threaded. The outer face or end of the enlarged portion 8, is formed, as shown, with a cup-like depression or cavity 4:, which communicates centrally with the reduced inner and central opening 5 of the shank 2.
For the reason hereinafter set forth, I provide a comparatively small exhaust air passage 6, which leads from the recess 4 through the body of the head 1 and lengthwise through the shank 2 on the outer side of its central bore 5. 4, I provide a circular band or strip 7 of metal or other suitable material, the outer face of which has formed therein a continuous projection or rib 8. WVith this ribbed face of the circular member 7 contacts the marginal portion of a disk 9 of comparatively thin rubber or other suitable flexible material. The rubber disk thus employed is held in place in contact with the band 7 by the inturned outer portion of an internally threaded cap 10 which is adapted, as shown, to be screwed upon the threaded periphery of the head 1. The inturned outer portion of the cap 10, has formed on its inner face a continuous circular recess 11 which is adapted, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing, to receive the material of which the disk is formed which is pressed therein by the rib 8 of the band 7.
It is obvious that by the means described, the disk will be firmly clamped over the recess a of the head or cup body.
Leading into a threaded opening formed in the wall of the shank 2 is a regulating screw which is indicated in dotted lines at 12 in Fig. 2. The inner end of this screw is adapted to intersect the air exhaust or relief passage 6 and said screw is provided on its outer end with a suitable knurled head 12.
In the operation of the class of massage devices to which my invention particularly applies, an air pump and controlling mechanism is ordinarily employed by means of which air is alternately injected through a tubular conductor which is adapted to be connected with the shank 2, through the shank passage 5 and into the cup chamber or recess 4 and withdrawn therefrom, this operation being sufliciently rapid to result in a corresponding rapid inward and outward or vibratory motion of the flexible disk 9. In utilizing my device, the outer surface of the disk is placed against the surface to be massaged, with the result that the skin of the person to be operated upon, is subjected to the action of the vibratory motion of the disk.
As in my said former patented construction, the air outlet which is indicated at 6 in the accompanying drawing, is for the purpose of affording relief to the disk from undesirable air pressure and preventing any tendency of the bursting of the vibrating disk through the undue pressure thereon. Ordinarily the air pump or controlling mechanism which is employed in machines of this class is operated through an electric motor and it has been found that a change in location of the motor and a consequent change in the employment of electric currents, results in a variation of the operation of the air pump or air controlling mechanism and in the consequent increase or decrease of air pressure within the massage head. In order to overcome this difficulty, I have provided the screw valve 12, which by being turned inward or outward, may serve to regulate the degree of obstruction of the passage 6 and thereby permit a greater or less amount of air to exhaust therethrough.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objiects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise c011- struction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
1. In a massage device, the combination with the body having a central opening therethrough and a cup-like recess in its outer face, and means for connection with an air conducting pipe, of a ribbed band fitting about said cup-like recess, a yielding disk of comparatively thin material on the outer side of said band, and a cap adapted to be screwed on to said body and having an inturned portion adapted to clamp the marginal portion of the disk against said band.
2. In a massage-device, the combination with the body having an opening therethrough, and a cup-like recess in one face, and means for connection with an air conducting pipe, of a circular band fitting about said recess and having a ribbed face, a yielding disk of comparatively thin material having its marginal portion fitted against said band, and a cap adapted to be screwed upon said cap body and having an inturned portion provided with a depression on its inner face.
8. In a massage device, the combination with the body having a tubular extension on one side and a cup-like recess on the t other, said tubular extension having an air relief passage therethrough and an adjustable screw valve adapted to intersect said air passage, of a yielding disk adapted to be clamped over the mouth of saidv cup recess.
