To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR DEROSIER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at North Oxford, in the county of VOI'CGS- ter and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lug-Strap-Supporting Means, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for maintaining the lug straps in predetermined positions on the picker sticks of looms, and the principal object of the present invention is to provide novel attachment of asimple nature which can be readily applied to and is adjustable upon any ordinary picker stick, and will effectively support the lug strap, preventing undue wear thereon and on the stick, thereby prolonging the lives of both.

A further object is to construct said attachment so that the return spring can be attached directly thereto, thus avoiding the necessity of additional fasteners that weaken the picker stick and also providing for adjusting the tension of the spring when the attachment is moved to shift the position of the lug strap to effect variations in the strength or power of the pick.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism, showing the same applied to a picker stick. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a detail cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, with the lug strap removed. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the support. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the lug strap showing the washer.

Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the embodiment illustrated, a picker stick is designated 6, and is pivoted at its lower end in the usual manner, as shown at 7. The lug strap is designated 8, and may be of any well known construction, said lug strap surrounding the upper portion of the picker stick, and having a washer located between and supported on its side portions and against the inner face of the stick. This washer, which is interposed between the picker stick and the sweep stick, consists of an intermediate portion 9 located between the sides of the lug strap, and upper and lower oppositely extending flanges 10, disposed above and below the lug strap and maintaining the washer in place.

The means for securing the lug strap is preferably constructed as follows. A shank 11 is employed that is placed longitudinally against the outer side of the picker stick, and has a longitudinal slot 12 therein. A holding bolt 13, passing through the stick and slot, has jam nuts 14: on its rear side, and washers 15, located on the bolt, are provided with oppositely extending lugs 16 that embrace the picker stick and shank, thus preventing lateral displacement. The shank is furthermore provided above the slot with a picker stick embracing yoke 17 having side members and a cross member for engaging the sides and front faces of the picker stick, respectively, and a set screw 18 threaded through the shank, has its inner end located in the yoke and engages with the rear side of the stick. A jam nut 19 is preferably threaded on the set screw.

A lug strap engaging head is carried by the upper portion of the shank, and is slightly offset therefrom, so that when the shank is secured to the picker stick, the head will be spaced therefrom, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. This head consists of an intermediate bar 20 having oppositely disposed upper and lower fingers 21 that terminate in offset hooks 22, said fingers form ing opposite seats 23 in which the lug strap is engaged. A cushion or protective covering of leather or other suitable material 24; surrounds the bar 20, and has outstanding cars 25 extending along the inner sides of the fingers 21 and having openings 26 in their outer ends to receive the hooks 22. A staple 27, engaged over the inner side of the cushion or protective covering, has its terminals located in openings 28 in the rod or bar 20. The lower end of the shank 11 terminates in a rearwardly and upwardly extending hook 29 and a strap 30 has openings 31 in which the hook may be engaged. The strap is connected to the usual return spring By offsetting the upper end or head of the device, the cushioning material can be applied to the head without hearing on the picker stick and interfering with the flat portion of the shank of the device resting firmly gainst the rear face of the picker stick.

plied to an ordinary picker stick. When in place, it will effectively support the lug strap and will constitute convenient means for connecting the return spring to the stick. At the same time, although of metal, the portion which is associated with the lug strap is not in direct contact with said strap, as it is protected by the cushioning material 24:. By adjusting the device upwardly or downwardly, the point of connection of the lug strap with the picker stick can be changed and at the same time the tension I of the return spring is varied so that the strength or power of the pick can be adjusted to a nicety. The device performs three functions; it acts as a support for the lug strap and can be adjusted as desired, it constitutes means for connecting the return spring to the picker stick, and it furthermore acts as a material reinforcement to said picker stick.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. I11 a lug strap support, the combination with a lug strap engaging head, of means for securing the head to a picker stick with the said head in spaced relation to the stick, cushioning material surrounding the head, and a device for securing the cushioning material to the head, said device cletachably engaging the head and having a portion located in the space between the head and picker stick, said device being thereby held in position on the head.

2. In a lug strap support, the combination with a lug strap engaging head, of means for securing the head to a picker stick with the inside face ofthe head in spaced relation thereto, said head having lug strap receiving seats, cushioning material surrounding the head and located in the seats, and a holding staple engaging the cushioning material and head and having its outer portion located in the space between the head and picker stick.

3. In a lug strap support, the combination with a head having spaced oppositely disposed outstanding fingers forming lug strap receiving seats, of cushioning material extending around the head and having upstanding portions provided with openings to receive the fingers, and means for supporting the head to a picker stick.

4. In a lug strap support, the combination with a shank having a hook at its lower end, said shank having a longitudinally disposed slot, of a securing bolt passing through the slot and having washers thereon, said washers being provided with oppositely disposed retaining lugs, a picker stick embracing yoke carried by the shank, a clamping screw threaded through the yoke. a head carried by the outer end of the shank, said head having oppositely disposed outstanding fingers forming seats, a cushion surrounding the head and having outstanding portions provided with openings for receiving the outer ends of the fingers, and a staple for securing the cushion in place.

5. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for picker sticks comprising a unitary structure formed with a longitudinally slotted shank adapted to bear against the picker stick, a device on one end of the shank for connecting a return spring thereto, a device on the opposite end of the shank for connecting a lug strap thereto, and a yoke formed on the shank for embracing the picker stick and securing the structure to the latter for longitudinal adjustment to vary the tension of the return spring and the point of connection between the lug strap and picker stick, in combination with means mounted on the shank in cooperative relation with the yoke for forming a means for clamping the structure to the picker stick, and a fastening passing through the slot of the shank and connected with the picker stick to form a second means for attaching the structure to the picker stick.

6. The combination of a picker stick, a doubled lug strap embracing the stick, a washer disposed at one side of the stick and carried by the strap, a lug strap attaching device mounted on the stick and disposed at the side of the latter opposite from the washer and having laterally projecting members at opposite sides for engaging over the top and bottom edges of the strap, and a covering of cushioning material on the head on which the strap bears.

7. As an article of manufacture, a device for attaching a lug strap and return spring to a picker stick, said device comprising a body or shank having a longitudinal slot in its lower portion, and a rectangular yoke projecting laterally from the unslotted portion of the shank and approximately at right angles thereto, a hook on the lower extremity of the shank below the slot thereof and formed with a rearwardly and upwardly extending bill, and a head on the upper end of the shank above the said yoke, said head consisting of a bar extending longitudinally in line with the shank, and a pair of transverselyextending spaced members at the upper and lower ends of the bar to form recesses at opposite sides of the head to receive a lug strap.

8. As an article of manufacture, a device for attaching a lug strap and return spring to a picker stick, said device comprising a unitary structure consisting of a body or shank having a flat longitudinally-s1otted lower end terminating in a hook arranged below the slot, a yoke integrally connected with the said body at a point above the slot said body having a threaded opening at the yoke, a head offset from the Hat portion of the body and spaced above the yoke, said head consisting of a longitudinally-extending bar formed With oppositely-extending spaced members forming lug strap engaging recesses atopposite sides of the head, and hooks on the extremities of the said members forming means for securing a cushioning covering on the head.
