Description

JOHN SABATINO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MASSAGE APPARATU- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15,1910,
Application filed September 15, 1909. Serial No. 517,798.
To all it ma concern:
Be it known hat I, JOHN SABATINO, a
subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, Morris Park, bortus, and more particularly to apparatus of this kind which includes a holding device for a vibrator, the holding deviceoomprising relatively movable members adapted to fit u on the hand, means for holding these mom rs in a pluralityof relative adjustments, and means for mounting the vibrator upon one of the members so that the vibrator can be emFoyed to impart vibratory movements to t e hand, for applicationin the operation of massage.
The object of the invention is to provide a simplegstrong and durable device for hold ing :1 vi rator upon the hand of'a massage operator, which 15 adjustable to adapt it for use by different persons, by means of which the vibrator can be securely clamped upon.
the hand so that it imparts to the hand variable vibratory movements, which has means for renderin it comfortable to the user, and which is c can and sanitary.
, The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and more particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing an embodiment of my invention a plied to a hand, the hand being indicate in broken outline; F i 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 0 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device having the vibrator removed; and Fig?! is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of 1 2. Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that it relates to massage;
' part v1 tered to the person undergoin treatment, by the contact of the operators%1and with the body of the person. It is well-known that far more eii'ectivevibratory treatment can be given by means of mechanically induced vibrations than by muscular action ai'bne, as it is im ossible by the second method to imbrations of suflicient rapidity, and for periods of sufiicient duration.' A mechamcal vibrator however, when mounted upon the hand of the operator, can be emp oyed to impart to the hand the necessary rapid and continued vibratory movements without tiring the operator, and the hand, particularly the fingers thereof, can then be used to apply the treatment to any desired part of the body of the patient. Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide an adjustable device for securing the vibrator upon the hand, the device comprising a hand clamp having relatively ad ustab e members 10 and 11. These members are slidably located one u on the other, and have opposite end port one 152 and 13 respectively, downwardly and rearwardly disposed, as isshown most clearl in Fig. 2, and terminating in horns 14 an 15 adapted to be positioned at the palm of the hand to hold the device in place. The 455 horns may be of any suitable shape and are preferably of unequal lengths, eing provided with protective covers 16 and 17 consisting of rubber sleeves or the like. These sleeves may be dis ensed with, and if sode: sired, may be rep seed by felt or any h? material adapts for the purpose.
Positioned upon the member 10 is a plate I 18 having a longitudinal opening or slot 19.
-The member 10 has a slot 20 through which pro acts a part 21 of the plate 18, connected wit the member 11 means of a screw 22- or in any other suitab e manner. It will be understood that owing to the provision of the slot 20 the members 12 and 13 are relatively movable, the plate 18 movin with the member 13. Slidabl located in t 'e slot 19 of the plate 18 is a blocl' 23 secured to the member 10 by means of a screw 24 or in any other suitable manner. The block 23 has an upward extension 25 presentin a threaded opening 26 in which is loca a correspondingly threaded spindle 27. p
The plate 18 has at the ends, bearings 28 and 29 res ectively, one of which is removable. As s own for example in the accompanying drawings, the bearing 29 has lugs 30 secured to the plate by means of screws 31 or in any other convenient manner. The spindle 27 has a reduced end 32 journaled in the bearing 28 and at the other end has a reduced extension 38 constituting an op crating stem and journaled in the bearing 29. At the free extremity, the stem 33 has a burred head 34 by means of which it can be conveniently manipulated. It will be undcrstoodlhat by turning the spindle in one direction or the other the members 10 and 11 are wrrespondingy adjusted relativel I to one another, the movement of the spin le causing a corresponding movement of the block 23. This in turn moves the member 10 with respect to the member 11 to cause these members to be drawn together or to be separated.
Integral with the block 23 are pointers 35 extending laterally over the late 18 and adapted to cooperate with sea es 36. These ma be graduated in any suitable manner 0 indicate the adjustment of the clamping members for hands of different sizes, to assist inrapidlypositioning the device upon the hand. fltigid with the plate 18 is a bracket 37 of My suitable form, upon which the vibrator 38 which may be of any type adapted to the purpose is mounted, in any convenient manner. Thevibrator has suitable means 39 for connecting it with the source of power, and when operated imparts to the hand the desired v1 ratory movement.
Between the downwardly disposed parts 12 and 13 of the relatively movable mem hers is positioned a pad 40 of felt or any other suitable material, and positioned against the under sides of the members 10 End-I1. The material of which the pad is fashioned permits it to spread and contract as necessary when the hand clamp is adjusted, and it renders the device comfortable to the user. The extremities of the pad are downwardly curved and tapered as shown most clearly in Fi 2, so that the opening' formed between t e pad and the horns l4 and 15 conforms suitably to the shape of the hand.- The member 11 has downwardly extending parts 41 w ich en- Ea e at the outside of the pad'and erve to o d the sameagainst displacement transversely of the device. The pad is also referably attachd at the parts 12 and 1 by means of stitches 42 passing through suitable 0 enings 43 of the parts, or in any other suitab e manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
