MACHINE FOR, TRIMMING THE EDGES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed July 23, 1909. Serial No. 509,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE S. Vosn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brookline, county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Trimming the Edges of Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to machines for trimming the edges of boots and shoes, and
' has for its object to provide a simple and efficient attachment, which is especially de signed and adapted to be applied to edge trimming machines employing a rotary cutter having a plurality of stationary or fixed knives or blades. To this end, I employ a sleeve, which is designed to be fittedonto the rotatable shaft to which the rotary cutter is fastened, and provide the said sleeve with an annular flange, which carries a plu rality of beds, which cooperate with the blades or knives of the rotary cutter. The sleeve has mounted on it a ring, which cooperates with the said beds by a pin and cam slot arrangement for adjusting the beds with relation to the cutting edges of the knives or blades, to uncover the same more or less according to the depth of the cut. Provision is made for rendering the sleeve fast on the shaft and for keeping the beds and their operating ring in close engagement as will be described. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a sufiicient portion of an edge-trimming machine embodying this invention to enable the same to be understood. Fig. 2, an enlarged longitudinal section of the shaft and the attachment thereon. Fig. 3, a detail in elevation to be referred to. Fig. 4:, a detail in plan to be referred to. Figs. 5 and 6, elevations of the sleeve and the beds carried thereby. Figs. 7 and 8, details of a bed removed from its supporting sleeve. Fig. 9, a detail of the ring employed to adjust the beds, and Fig. 10, a modification to be referred to.
Referring to the drawings, 64 represents a rotary shaft having bearings in a framework b, which may be of any suitable or desired construction, said shaft being shown as provided with the pulley c for driving the same. The shaft a has secured to it a rotary cutter cl having a plurality of knives or blades 6, which have a fixed or nonadjustable relation to the body of the rotary cutter. In the present instance, the knives or blades are represented as integral with the body portion of the rotary cutter, which is not herein claimed, as it forms the subjectmatter of another application Serial No. 422581 filed March 23, 1908, by Albert E. Ayer. The rotary cutter b is shown as mounted on the tapered end of the shaft (1 and is secured thereon by a screw 9 extended through a shield or guard h.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient attachment, which is capable of being readily applied to the shaft a and is provided with a plurality of adjustable beds 10, which extend between the blades or knives and are adjustable with relation to the cutting edges thereof.
The attachment referred to comprises a sleeve 12, having an annular flange 13 at its front end, which carries the beds 10. For this purpose, the flange 13 is provided with a plurality of slots 14 for the reception in each of a narrow neck portion 15 of a bed, which is provided at the ends of the neck portion 15 with upright portions or wings 16, 17, which are designed to engage the opposite surfaces of the annular flange 13 and offer a broad bearing for guiding the bed in its movement radially with relation to the shaft. The radial movement referred to, is effected by rotary movement of a ring or collar 18 normally loose on the sleeve behind the annular flange and operatively connected with the bed by a pin and cam slot connection. In the present instance, the rear upright wall 17 of the bed is provided with a slot 19 extended transversely of the bed and inclined, and the ring 18 has extended from its front face a pin 2-0, which is designed to enter said inclined or cam slot, so that, rotation of the ring causes the pin to travel longitudinally of the slot and effects bodily movement of the bed in the radial slot 14 in its carrier. Provision is made for limiting the rotary movement in opposite directions, so as to retain the pin 20 in the slot of the bed with which it cooperates, which may be accomplislied by providing the ring 18 with stop pins 21, 22, on opposite sides of the actuating pin 20 (see Flg. 9), which stop pins are adapted to bring up against the opposite sides of the wing 17 in which the slot 19 is made, or the ends of the slot 19 may be closed as repre sented in Fig. 10. After the beds 10 have been adjusted with relation to the cutting edges of the blades or knives, they may be secured in their adjusted position by making the ring 18 fast on the sleeve 12, which may be accomplished by a set screw 25. 7
Provision is made for securing the sleeve 12 to the shaft a, which is effected as shown by a screw 26 carried by a ring 27 mounted on the sleeve 12, said screw extending through a hole 28 in the sleeve 12.
Provision is made for keeping the bed actuating ring 18 in close contact with the beds 10, and for this purpose the sleeve 12 is provided with screw threads 30, which are engaged by a nut or internally threaded ring 31, the hole 28 in the sleeve 12 being made larger than the screw 26 to permit the ring 27 to be moved lengthwise of the sleeve.
The bed carrying flange 13 may have secured to it as by screws 33 a ring 34 through which are extended pins or rods 35 attached to a feather edger ring 36, which is normally projected over the knives e by springs 37, the outward movement of the feather edger ring by the springs 37 being limited by pins or rods 38 fast to the ring 3% and loosely extended through the feather edger, the pins or rods 38 being headed to limit the outward movement of the feather edger ring 36. The feather edger is not herein claimed broadly, as it forms the subject-matter of another application, Serial No. 196238 filed by me on the third day of July 1909.
The construction herein shown is capable of being used on any edge-trimming machine, but is especially designed and adapted to be used on the well-known Buzzell trimming machine, and it is only necessary to remove the rotary tool of the Buzzell machine from its shaft and replace it with the attachment herein shown.
To facilitate adjustment of the beds with relation to the knives or blades, the ring 18 may be provided with a scale or indications 39 as shown in Fig. 4:, with which cooperates a pointer on index 10 attached to the bed 10 in line with said scale.
