' ming the top lifts of shoeheels-employ shield members which rotate with a revolving cutter which is employed for trimming the top lift of a heel. 1n the trimming operation the body of the heel is pressed againstthe shield so that the heel is subjected to a se- Vere rubbing by the shield as it turns with the cutter. As these cutters and shields revolve at a high rate of speed, approximately six thousand revolutions per minute, it will be readily understood that the heel cover is subjected to severe treatment and'often be comes damaged;
With the device embodying the presentinvention a stationary guard plate is employed in substitution for the rotating shield above referred to and this guard plate is eccentrically mounted with respect to the rotating trimming cutter and is also rotatably adjust able so that the amount of exposed surface of the cutting blades may be increased or decreased as desired and the shoe heel will not be subjected to a rubbing of metal thereagainst. By using the present device the edge of the top liftof the shoe heel may be trimmed flush with the edge of the heel without danger of damaging the heel covering.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shield for heel trimming machines which may be secured in a number of adjusted positions and held secure against accidental movement.

Referring more particularly to the draw;- ings wherein like numerals of reference in- 0 right 'dicate corresponding parts thronghoutthe several views, the numeral 1 indicates a; heating forming a part of a trimming machine, this hearing having extended therethioiigh a shaft 2 which carries a shoe sole trimmer, a portion of which is indicated by the nu: meral 3.
Arranged directly beneath the shaft in the bearing 4 and parallel with the shaft, is a second shaft 5 which carries a sleeve 6 abutting at one end against the body of the machine and formed at its other endto provide a circular-plate 7 against. the outer face of which a rotating trimming cutter 8 works. This cutter is mounted upon and keyed to the shaft 5, as shown in Fi ure 3, j j The outer end of the sha t 5 is longitudinally bored andthreaded, as at 9, to receive a screw 10. This screw 10 holds in position against the cutter the enlarged inner end portion 11 of a bushing 12 through which the screw passes.
The enlarged portion 11 of the bushing has a surrounding flange 13 whichpositionsin the recess 14 formed in the back face of a guard plate 15, this recess aligning withan aperture lti which passes through the guard plate and longitudinally through an eccentric sleeve 17 Q which is formed integral with the plate and projects forwardly from the enter face thereof, as shown. The recess lat and passage 16 are eccentric to the plate and the sleeve 17, as shown in Figure 4. The bushing 12 passes through the passage 16 of the sleeve and, as shown in Figure 3, the bushing is of slightly greater length than the passage through the sleeve so that when the screw 10 is drawn in tightly to hold the bushing securely against the face of the cutter 8, the sleeve and shield 15 will not be held tight- 1y but will be permitted to rotate about the bushing.
Surrounding and secured to the shaft 2 directly above the guard plate 15 and sleeve 17 is a collar 18 having formed circumferentially thereabout a recess 19 in which positions a two part ring 20, one of the parts of which is supplied with a grease cup 21.
Each of the parts of the ring 20 has formed in the outer face thereof midway between its ends, a pivot pin recess 22 designed to receive the reduced tip 23 of a screw member 24. Each of these screws 2a is adapted to have threaded engagement in a recess formed in the end of a yoke 25 which yoke is de signed to receive the two part ring 20 in the manner shown in Figure 2, so that the apertured ends thereof will be at diametrically opposite points upon this ring and the tips of the screws 23 will be in position to engage in the apertures 22, as shown.
Suitable holding nuts 26 are threaded onto screws 23 to hold the same in position. EX- tending downwardly from the yoke 25 intermediate its ends is a sleeve 27 which is designed to receive a rod 28 which is reduced at its lower end as indicated at 29.
Surrounding the sleeve 17 is a strap 30 which has formed integral therewith an interially threaded sleeve 31 which is adapted to receive the threaded reduced portion 29 of the rod 28.
By referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that the eccentric is illustrated as being at its lowest point so that the guard 15 leaves exposed only a small portion of the cutter and when the eccentric is in this position the rod 28 is backed out of the sleeve 31 until the upper end abuts the bottom of the socket 27 in which it is positioned. Thus it will be seen that no movement of the eccentric or of the guard disk can occur as a result of frictional engagement between the rotating cutter and the portion 11 of the bushing.
\Vhen the guard disk is to be shifted so as to expose more of the cutter for use the post 28 may be rotated to thread its lower end in to the sleeve 31 whereupon the disk 15 may be rotated until the desired amount of the cutter is uncovered. The rod 28 is then reversely rotated so as to be backed out of the sleeve 31 until its upper end is brought into abuttin engagement with the inner end of the soc et 27. Since the cutter rotates in a clockwise direction the tendency possibly would be, if the upper end of the rod 28 was not already in the socket 27 as far as it can go, for the frictional contact between the cutter 8 and the portion 11 of the bushing to cause the guard plate 15 to rotate but this cannot occur for the reason that the rod 28 as previously stated is backed out of the sleeve 31 after the proper setting of the plate is made. Therefore, the rotating of the cutter will only act through its frictional engagement with the bushing to maintain the guard disk in the set position. There is thus provided a guard against which a shoe heel may be pressed while trimming the top lift thereof and a means for gauging an amount of cutter exposed so that the lift of the heel may be cut down flush with the edge of the heel without in any way damaging the heel covering.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a trimming machine having a rotary cutter, a guard plate overlying one face of the cutter and rotatably supported, eccentric means for moving the edge of the guard plate when rotated relative to the edge of the cutter, and means for adjustably holding the plate in position, comprising an eccentric strap, a bar member adjustably secured to the strap, and means for securing the bar member to a fixed part of the machine.
2. in a rimming machine of the character described employing rotary cutter, a bush in g mounted against and projecting from the face of the cutter, a guard disk, an eccentric body projecting from one face of the guard disk, said bushing passing through. the disk and co entric body, means for maintaining the disk and body in position upon the bush ing, a strap about the eccentric body, and means carried by said eccentric strap and adjustably connected to a fixed body for holding the strap against movement.
3. In a trimming machine of the character described employing a rotary cutter, a bushing mounted against and projecting from the fare of the cutter, a guard disk, an eccentric body projecting from one face of the guard disk, said bushing passing through the disk and eccentric body, means for maintaining the disk and body in position upon the bushing, a strap about the eccentric body, a rod adjustably attached at one end to the strap, and means for receiving and holding the other end of said rod to secure the same and said strap against movement.
4. In a trimming machine of the character described, having a pair of shafts one thereof carrying a rotary cutter, a guard disk eccentrically mounted before the face of and relative to the cutter, an eccentric body carried by the guard disk, means for supporting the guard disk and maintaining the same against rotation with the cutter, a strap about the eccentric, a holding rod adjustably attached tric thereto, a member extending longitudinally from the end of the shaft through and rotatably supporting said disk, said disk when rotated having its periphery shifted relative to the periphery of the cutter, a threaded sleeve having pivotal connection with and extending radially from said disk, and a holding bar having one end threadably engaged in said sleeve and having its other end connected to an adjacent fixed portion of the machine.

In a trimming machine of the character described having a rotating shaft provided with a threaded bore opening through one end and a cutter mounted on said end, a pin having one end threaded into said bore, a bushing mounted on said pin and having a disk body formed at its inner end abutting the adjacent face of said cutter, a guard disk having an eccentric body projecting from one face, said disk and body having a passage formed eccentrically therethrough for the reception of said bushing, the guard disk abutting the disk of the bushing, an eccentric strap surrounding said eccentric body, and means for connecting said strap with an adjacent fixed portion of the machine for maintaining the eccentric body in a set position.

In a trimming machine of the character described having a rotating shaft provided with a threaded bore opening through one end and a cutter mounted on said end, a pin having one end threaded into said bore, a bushing mounted on said pin and'having a disk body formed at its inner end abutting the adjacent face of said cutter, a guard disk having an eccentric body projecting from one face, said disk and body having a passage formed eccentrically therethrough for the reception of said bushing, the guard disk abutting the disk of the bushing, an eccentric strap surrounding said eccentric body, an interiorly threaded sleeve formed integral with said strap, a bar member having one end threadably engaged in said sleeve, and means for connecting the other end of said bar with an adjacent fixed part of the machine.
