Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLiAM J, NooN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter- Guards for Heel-Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a guard adapted to be applied adjacent to the cutter of a machine used for trimming the heels of shoes, in order to protect the counter of the shoe from the cutter.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple form of such guard which is ad justable as to the distance by which it pro-- jects beyond the cutter, whereby to govern the amount of material cut from the heel edges when trimmed or shaved; of which the adjustments may be made without requiring the machine to be stopped; which is freely movable longitudinally of the cutter, and which is without projections likely to interfere with the hand of the operator holding the shoe up to the cutter.
In the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated what I consider at present to be the best embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the cutter of a heel trimming machine having my improved guard applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a left hand end elevation of the guard; Fig.
4C is a front elevation of the guard; Fig. 5 is a side view of the adjustable plate of the guard; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the adjusting member of the guard.
Like reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The cutter herein represented is one used on a standard make of cutting machine, and comprises two disks or flanges a; and b hav ing hubs a and b, respectively, fitting upon the shaft 0 of the machine. Between the disks are clamped cutting blade d and e which are secured by a nut f threaded upon the shaft and bearing against the hub 79', thereby pressing the disk 7) against the blades and the latter against the disk a. On the blades and disks are cooperating guiding tongues and grooves eccentric to the shaft, along which the blades may be adjusted to cause their cutting edges to revolve in the desired path The guard consists of a hub or sleeve g fitting slidingly upon the hub b and a plate 7b separate from the sleeve but connected adjustably thereto, and extending therefrom toward the side of the cutter at which the shoe being trimmed is held. The guard plate has a flange 1' partly inclosing the cutter and extending around suflicient of the periphery thereof to give ample protection to the counter of the shoe operated upon and to the fingers of the operator. The guard is prevented from rotating with the cutter by means of an arm j having a fork j secured to the sleeve 9 in any suitable manner. The connection of the guard with the machine frame through the arm 7' is such that a certain amount of movement of the guard longitudinally of the cutter is permitted. If desired the non-adjustable part of the guard may also have a plate or flange 9 extending in continuation of the plate it over that part of the cutter left uncovered by the plate 70, as indicated in Fig. 3, but whether this exact construction is followed or not is immaterial, provided only that some connection bet-ween the sleeve 9 and the plate it, permitting in and out movement of the latter, exists. In the construction shown such a connection is provided by means of pins or bolts 72 secured in sockets Z, or otherwise, on the plate It, and entering slidingly into sockets or guides m on the flange g, and by means of springs n connected at the points 0 and p to the sockets Z and m respectively.
The bolts 70 and sockets m are illustrative of any sort of complemental slides and guides suitable for the purpose of permitting inward and outward movement of the guard plate 7i, and it is immaterial to the purposes of the invention how these slides and guides are constructed or at what points they are provided on the respective parts, or whether or not their relative positions on the respective parts are reversed. The function of the springs, as is evident, is to press the guard plate It inwardly and to tend to hold the latter with the minimum amount of projection. A device for projecting the guard plate more or less is provided in the form of a helical cam g mounted on the side of the guard member 9 and secured thereon by a clamp screw r in a manner permitting rotation when desired, and when permitted by loosening of the clamp screw r. The cam q has a surface 9 on its outer face which gradually increases in distance from the sleeve 9, and bears against a lug s on the plate h. It will be readily appreciated that the guard plate may be made to project more or less by turning the cam a desired amount, and that the springs n hold the lug 8 against the cam and retract the guard plate when the cam is turned as to permit retraction. The sleeve 9 is that part of the guard which constitutes a holder for the adjustable part it of the guard, and is one specific embodiment of the element of the device which may be called generically a holder.
Normally the guard is held close to the cutter so that its lip somewhat overlaps the knives thereof, by means of a spring 25 hearing against the end of the sleeve 9 and against a head f on the nut f, said nut being comparatively long in order both to press against the cutter flange hub b and to provide room for the spring. As the sleeve of the guard slides on the hub b, the guard is adapted to move so as to uncover more of the cutter blades when the high partof the heel at the back is brought, by swinging of the shoe, toward the cutter.
The adjusting means above described is exceedingly simple in character whereby it may be made at slight expense. It is small and so far back from the edge of the guard plate that it does not interfere with those fingers of the operator which grasp the counter of the shoe when holding the heel up to the cutter. At the same time the entire guard with its attachment is able to move longitudinally of the cutter to accommodate the differences in height of different parts of a heel. Furthermore the adjustment of the guard may be made while the machine is running, and this is of immense value from a practical standpoint. In all the heel trimming machines in use of which I have knowledge, adjustments of the guard cannot be made without stopping the machine and thus occasioning consider able loss of time. As a result operators, whose earnings depend upon the amount of work they turn out, in order to save time often fail to make necessary adjustments, and consequently do imperfect work. My invention enables the operators of heel trimming machines to produce better work without losing time.
The term plate, used to designate the adjustable member h of the guard, is a term of description only and is not intended to have any limiting significance. I consider that any element or member capable of being used in a way similar to that described, so as to act as the guarding element proper of the guard, is the mechanical equivalent of my plate it, whether such element is made as an arm, a ring, a band, or in any other way, and is included within the meaning of the term plate, as such term is used in the following claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a heel trimmer of a counter guard mounted adjacent to one end of the trimmer in constant readiness for moving axially thereof with yieldingly resisted motion, and including two members, one of which is adjustable relatively to the other toward and from the axis of the trimmer, and means for so adjusting said memher.
2. The combination with a heel trimming cutter, of a counter guard mounted slidingly upon the hub of the cutter, and including a plate and a cam for adjusting said plate in and out with respect to the axis of the cutter.
3. In combination with a heel trimming cutter including a hub, a counter guard consisting in part of a sleeve mounted slidingly upon said hub so as to be movable longitudinally of the axis of the cutter, and including also a plate, means affording a sliding connection between said plate and sleeve extending transversely of the axis of the cutter, and an adjust-ing device arranged to move said plate along said guiding means.
4. A counter guard comprising a main portion, a laterally projecting portion. complemental slides and guides connected with said main portion and laterally extending portion, respectively, and so arranged as to permit the latter to move in and out with respect to the former, and means for securing sald laterally extending portion in various positions of lateral adjustment with respect to the main portion.
5. A counter guard comprising a sleeve, a plate extending transversely of said sleeve, means connecting said plate slidingly to the sleeve extending in a direction such as to permit the plate to move toward and from the sleeve, and a cam mounted upon the sleeve with provisions for adjustment there on, and having engagement with a part of the plate.
6. A counter guard comprising a sleeve having connected therewith a laterally ex tending flange, a plate separate from said sleeve and flange, but forming in efl'ect a continuation of the latter, means connecting said plate and flange together with provision for permitting movement of the latter toward and from the former, a cam mounted on the side of the sleeve and having a helical cam face, and a lug on the plate engaged with said cam face.
