My invention relates to shoe working ma chinery, particularly to a heel tap trimming pair shops.
The main object of my invention is to protect the body of a shoeheel from being marred when the tap is applied thereto and is trimmed flush with the surface of the heel.
It is customary in shoe repairing to apply taps which are somewhat larger in area than the bottom of theheel and then to trim the surplus material from the edge of the tap, making the edge of the latter form a continuation of the heel surface. Heretofore,
the cutter used for this purpose has had its face covered by a collar which servedto re-, tain the cutter on its shaft and also served to prevent cutting of the body of the heel by. the cutter. The operating shaft is indicated at 1, and is journalled in a suitable bearing 2 which may be applied to or form a part of the frame of the machine. A cutter 3, of familiar form, is mounted on the end of shaft 1, being secured in place by a collar 4 and a screw 5 which is inserted in the end of the shaft 1. The screw and slot assembly of the. bracket elements 8 and 9, permit the guard to be'adjusted axially of the cutter and its shaft.
Figure3illustrates the application of a heel to the cutter,the body of the -heelH resting against guard 13 and :the tap bearing againstethe'forward face of gauge "6 and! having its edgein -contact with'the teeth of the cutter 3. =It will be seen-that there is no moving partadjacent theh'eel body which can injurethe latter. The guard provides a support for the heel, thereby enabling the workmen to trim the tap more accurately than has been the case'heretofore, when it was necessary for the workmen to maintain a space between the heel and the rotating collar previously used which extended to the periphery of the cutter.
Obviously the details'of thestructure d escribed may be varied without departing from. thespirit "of my'invention, and I contemplate the exclusive use of such modifications as come within the scope of my claims.

In a devicefor trimming the-tap of a heel on a' shoe, a rotatable cutter, a cylindrical member having a smooth end projecting over the teeth of said cutter and adapted to engage the face of theheeltap to determine the width of a cut made by said cutter on the edge of the heel tap, and a guard mounted in spaced relation to said member and adjacent to the teeth of said cutter and adapted to engage and protect the body of the heel to which the tap is applied, said guardbeing flat across the axis of the cutter and free'from projections extending'a substantial distance away from, said cutter whereby the shoe shank may be 'projeotedacross said axis to trim the breast of the heel tap. 7 I
