To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THEODOR F. Scrunnnn and MILTON C. STERN, citizens of the United States, and residing in Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic. Registers, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in registers for making duplicate copies of writings which may be used with special advantage for the taking of orders by motormen, conductors and other employees in the handling and despatching of passenger and other tralfic in electric cars, trains and the like, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of register which can be readily and easily mounted in any car, booth or station, where orders for the moving of cars can be delivered, and the invention embodies that novel construction and arrangement of arts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed, whereby the re ister may be readily removed when desire from one station to another, and when mounted in place can be securely locked to prevent access to the register by unauthorized parties.

The operating parts of the register are mounted in a suitable casing comprising side walls 1, 1, a bottom 2, and a front wall 3, hinged at 4, 4, to one of the side walls, so that ready access may be had to the registry mechanism, and this plate is locked shut with an ordinary lock and key.

The construction of the register mechanism thus briefly described is all old and well known, and forms no part of the present invention, and need not be further described.'

22 is the back plate for the register, and instead of being secured in the usual way, and forming a part of the register casing,- this back plate is separable from the casing and is provided with screw holes 23, by means of which the plate can be secured to the wall 2 1, of any suitable booth, or in any other desired permanent position in a car or wherever else desired. This plate is provided with four lugs 25, which are projected upward to leave sockets 26, 26, and the side walls 1, 1, of the registry casing. are provided with beveled lugs 27, 27, to engage in these sockets and hold the registry casing securely on the back pla.te, and the casing is further provided with a lock 28, the bolt of which engages in a suitable recess 29 in the back plate, so that the register can be securely locked in osition. 'When the re ister is thus locke to the back plate, al access to the register is prevented, and the register also covers up the screws or other devices for securing the back plate in position in the booth, station or car.

Mounted on the back plate at the upper The feed rollers are driven 'in the usual way by the hand crank 17 mounted on end thereof, is a spring clip 30, which clip is designed to hold the duplicate of the order last written on the writing tablet in front of the register, so that the party using the register shall always have before him the'previous order that has been given.

The use of the register will be clear from the foregoing description. The register itself is used in the ordinary and usual way for taking orders. The back plates may be purchased separately and mounted at all the various places that it may be desired to use a register for the taking of orders, and the registers can be changed from car to car or booth to booth as may be desired.

When it is desired to use the register in any place that is exposed to the weather, it will be understood that a cover is used to cover over the upper portion of the register and protect the stationery from the inclemency of the weather.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In an autographic register, the combination, with the casing for the operating parts inclosing the o crating parts for the top, bottom, sides an front, of a separable back plate to form a complete inclosure,

means for securing the back plate inde endently in position, means for removab y securing the register casing to the back plate to conceal the back plate securing means, and a key controlled lock to lock the casing to the late, whereby a single back plate may be used for a series of registers.

2. In an autographic register, the combination, with the casing for the operating parts inclosing the operating parts for the top, bottom, sides and front, of a. separable back plate to form a complete inclosure, corresponding lugs and projections on the side walls of the casing and the back plate respectively for removably securing the casing to the back plate, and a key controlled lock to lock the casing to the plate.

3. In an autographic register, the combination, with the casing for the operating parts inclosing the operating parts for the top, bottom, sides and front, of a separable back plate, means for removably securing the casin to the back plate to form a complete incl osure, and a clip mounted on the back plate to hold the last Written sli in front of the operator without detaching from the register.
