Letters .Patent No. 94,896, dated September 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEvAToRs.
'I'he Schedule referred to in then Letters Patent and making part of the'same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES' T. KETCHLEDGE', ot' Bums, in the count-y of Shiawassee, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevating-Apparatus and do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication. The nature of my invention consists in the construction of an elevating-apparatus for all kinds of heavy materials, but which is especiallyadapted for the use of butchers in cleaning beeves, hogs, 85e.
Figure 1 isa perspective view ot' my invention. Figure 2 is a perspective view ofthe trestle. Letter A represents the centre pole of my apparatus, which is upheld by the legs B, all of which 'are pivoted to it at the top. l
Onthis pole is placed the'slide C, towhich are pivoted three braces D, the upper ends of which are se-- cured to the sides of' the legs B. By raising this slide the legs are made to extend outward to anydesired distance, and by drawing it downward they are made to close.
'Upon the top of the centre pole is placed the pivot E, to which the lever F is attached.
This lever has three pulleys secured to it, one at the front end, where the weight is attached, and two at the opposite ones, over which the cord G passes.
Upon the lower end ot' the centre pole there is placed a sleeve, H, to which one of the pulleys used is fastened. There maybe any desired .number of these pulleys,` and they can be either single or double, as the occasion may require.
In using this apparatus for raising heavy weights, or in'dressing heeves, the platform 'I is not used, but when used for dressing smaller animals, it is attached to the legs of the apparatus by means of two hooks.
Upon one end ofthe platform there is a long crosspiece, which catches in the hooks and supports the back end, while to the front cross-piece L there are three legs, K, pivoted at each end, which etectually prevent all rocking or other motion.
Upon the end ot' this platform there is placed a rackbar, M, in which the curved arm N"A catches. This arm Aand rack are used to support a barrel, or any vessel containing water, in which the animals are cleaned.
After the body has been washed, the lever F can be swung around, so as to carry the animal over to the trestle O, where it is to be hung.
This trestle consists ot' a. long bar, upon the ends of which there is placed a.- metal bearing, in which there are pvoted three legs, one of which extends outward parallel to the bar, while the other two run at right angles.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cent-re pole A,provided with the slide C and sleeve H, iu combination with. the braces 1 and leg B, when used to form an elevating-apparatus, substantially as dessabed.
i 2. .lhe pivot E and lever F, provided with three pulleys, in combination with the cord G and sleeve H, substantially as described.
3. The platform I, attached to the elevating-apparatus, and provided -with a device for holding a vessel ot' water, substantially as set forth.
4. The trestle O, when constructed in the manner, and used substantially as described.
5. The platform I, slide C, oord G, pivot E, braces D, and legs B, when all are used to form an elevatingapparatus, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of April,l 1869.
JAMES T. KETGHLEDGE.
