This invention relates to a novel construction in a bottle, the object being to provide a device which after being once filled and sealed cannot be opened without fracture thereof, thus rendering the same incapable of being again filled for purposes of sale, and consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the neck portion of the bottle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. -3- is a view in elevation of the stopper employed.
My invention has for its object to provide a bottle adapted for use for special preparations and which it is desirable to have destroyed in order to prevent the same from being refilled with an imitation of the original contents, and to this end my said bottle is so constructed that in order to open the same it is necessary to break away part of the neck in such manner as to prevent re-use of the bottle for the reason that such fracture will be immediately apparent and the spurious nature of the contents thus revealed to the purchaser.
In the neck of the bottle adjacent the mouth thereof and on the exterior surface of the same I provide a V-shaped groove A which extends vertically from a point adjacent the rim of the neck on diametrically opposite sides and terminates in a tangential curved portion B which connects the vertical portions on opposite sides of the bottle, said groove being thus substantially of U-shaped contour. The rim portion of the neck is provided with diametrically opposite rectangular slots or grooves C of relatively small depth and disposed in alinement and communicating with the said groove A, said slots or recesses 0 being adapted to receive the end of a tool, such as a screw-driver or Specification of Letters Patent.

In inserting the tool in the slots or recesses C and turning the same so as to force the op posed walls of said slots apart, the glass would obviously fracture along the lines of East resistance determined by said groove The bottle is adapted to be sealed by means of a stopper E preferably made of glass or other hard brittle substance and is slightly tapered to conform to the taper of the opening in the neck, said stopper having plane ends and being provided between its ends with a diametrically disposed opening F, the latter being disposed so far below the upper end of said stopper as to fall below the lower ends of the slots or recesses C when said stopper is inserted in the bottle. The upper end of said stopper E when inserted is preferably flush with or slightly below the lower ends of said slots or recesses C so as to prevent its engagement by a tool by means of which it may be withdrawn. In inserting said stopper the said opening F therein is so disposed that one end of the same will be exposed by the fracturing out of the portion D of the neck. The lower end of said stopper should when inserted fall below the lowermost portion 13 of the groove.
In opening the bottle as previously stated, after breaking out the part D of the neck, the stopper E may be withdrawn, but in the event that the contents of the bottle should be of a nature which might cause adhesion of the stopper to the walls of the neck, the withdrawal of the stopper may be difficult even after breaking out of said portion D. Should this be the case, a nail or hook may be inserted in said opening F in said stopper and the latter turned on its axis thereby previous to withdrawal in order to first free the same. After opening the bottle in the manner above described the same may be maintained sealed between the intervals of use of the contents thereof by means of said stopper E as will be obvious, but after said bottle is empty the refilling of the same for sale is rendered impossible.
The device is very simple, cheap, easily manipulated and not in any degree dangerous. The stopper E serves to prevent small particles of glass becoming free during fracture from finding their way into the liquid contents so that the device affords relatively no disadvantage as compared with the ordinary bottles at present in general use.
I claim as my invention:
In a bottle the combination with a neck provided exteriorly with a groove extending substantially halfway around the same and terminating in substantially diametrically opposite vertical portions, the latter extending to points adjacent the mouth of the neck, of a stopper of hard, brittle material disposed in said neck to seal the same and extending below the lowermost portion of the external groove therein and provided with a plane upper surface, there being an opening between the ends of said stopper, 15 said upper face of said stopper being disposed at a lower level than the rim of said neck.
