bottles, jars, or other receptacles, and is designed to provide a container of this character which may be hermetically sealed so as to require the consumer to destroy a portion of the neck thereof before its contents can be removed, thus giving visual evidence of the fact that the bottle has been emptied of its original contents and preventing unscrupulous persons from again filling the bottle with spurious or inferior liquids.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical transverse section through the neck and upper portion of the body of a bottle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section through the neck on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe guard-cap as it appears primary to its application.
Referring to the drawings, lrepresents the body of the bottle or other receptacle which may be of any preferred form and construction, and is provided with an upwardly-extending neck 2, the latter being formed near its base with'an annular groove 3, reducing the neck to leave a readily frangible portion 4, which may be conveniently broken away for the removal ofthe upper portion of the neck. The neck has its upper portion bulged or spread, as at 5, between its rim and a point. above the annular groove 3, thus producing an interior recess 6 and an overhanging rim shoulder 7.
In the operation of sealing the bottle after the body l has been filled with the desired liquid a bottom cork or stopper 8 is inserted within the neck thereof and forced down until its upper surface passes slightly below the reduced frangible portion 4. A Sealing disk 9 of any suitable material is then applied to rest upon the upper surface of the bottom stopper 8 and to bear against the inner surface of the frangible portion 4. An upper stopper 10 is then applied to seal the upper portion of the neck. This is composed of some suitable plastic material which hardens on se'tting-such, for instance, as sand and cement combined to the desired consistency with water. This plastic material or composition is forced into the neck until it conipletely fills the upper portion thereof from the upper surface of the sealing disk 9 to a point immediately below the rim-shoulder 7, the material being pressed into the recess 6, formed by the bulged portion 5, thus locking it in position and eifectually preventing its extraction.
In order to guard and prevent removal of the cementitious upper stopper 10, a metallic guard is provided comprising a sheet-metal guard cap or disk l1, adapted to cover the upper surface of the stopper 10 and to engage beneath the rim-shoulder 7. This cap is provided with oppositely-arranged anchoring arms or projections l2, bent` at right angles thereto and embedded in the body of the stopper 10, said arms being formed at their lower ends with angularly-bent anchoring flukes or wings 13, said wings being formed by notching the opposite side edges of the arms and bending portions thereof on the dotted lines shown in Fig. 3 obliquely to the plane of the arms, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These fiukes or wings are embedded to lie at an angle in the hardened cement composing the stopper 10, and thus eectually prevent the removal of the guard without destroying said stopper, and thus giving visual evidence of the fact that the bottle has been tampered with.
When it is desired to open the bottle for the removal of its contents, the upper portion of the neck is struck against or struck with some hard object with suflicient force to cause the neck to break at the frangible portion 4, thus separating the upper portion of the neck from the lower portion thereof and leaving the disk -9 and stopper 8 exposed for ready removal. By the described arrangement of the disk 9 it will be seen that this disk will cover and protect the lower stopper 8 and prevent any moisture from coming in contact therewithk and also prevent any small flying particles of broken glass from being deposited thereon. If any particles of glass should fall upon the disk, these will be removed with the disk when the latter is withdrawn, leaving the upper surface of the stopper 8 free from any particles liable to drop into the bottle when said stopper is extracted.
It will thus be apparent that the bottle cannot be opened for the removal of its contents without giving visual evidence of the fact that it has been opened or an attempt has been made to open same, and that upon IOO IIO
the removal of the upper portion of the neck the contents are exhausted. By the use of the metallic guard the application of a tool to dig or bore out the cement upper stopper l0 will be defeated, as the guard cannot be extracted or pierced for the removal of the cement stopper Without showing that an attempt has been made to withdraw the contents of the bottle.
The invention will erlectually prevent unscrupulous persons from opening the bottle, filling the same with spurious or inferior liquid and then again placing it on the market for sale in its original shape. i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bottle or other receptacle comprising a body having a neck provided with a weak- -ened portion, a lower stopper within the neck below said weakened portion, the neck being bulged above said weakened portion to provide a recess and rim-shoulder, an upper stop per composed of a body of hardened plastic material filling the neck between the weakened portion and shoulder, and a metallic guard interlocking with said shoulder and having anchoring'portions embedded in said plastic stop er.
2. A bott e or other receptacle comprising a body having a neck provided with a weakened portion, a lower stopper within the neck below said weakened portion, the neck being bulged above said weakened portion to provide a recess and rimmed shoulder, an upper stopper composed of a body of hardened plastic material filling the neck between the weakened portion and shoulder, and a metallic guard interlocking the said shoulder and provided with depending anchoring-arms 4embedded in the plastic stopper and having angular ilukes or wings. l
