CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON, OF PE'IALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
SEAL-LOCK FOR RECEPTACLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Seal-Lock for Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to attachments for signature seals for safety boxes and the like; it also has reference to safety boxes in which a number of persons have separate keys for separate locking openings in the same box, and in which a plurality of signature seals are used to cover said locking openings.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which is adapted to receive a seal for a lock and which also is adapted to preventsaid look from being opened withoutbreaking the seal.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device which is capable of protecting a plurality of locking openings with means to detect any tampering with the several locking openings.
These and other objects will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a View in elevation, showing a safety deposit box with the seal attachment in place; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the seal attachment; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the sepa rate parts of the device, 1 indicates a safety deposit box which has a cover 2 of any suitable form and material, which cover is hinged to the box 1 in any suitable manner. The cover has a lock of any suitable form such that a plurality of keys are necessary to open the same.
3 indicates the bolt of the lock, which may be of any suitable form, and is adapted to fit in a concavity provided in the side of the safety deposit box.
In the cover 2, are formed two or more openings 5, through which are adapted to be inserted keys to manipulate the lock.
Suitably pivoted to the cover 2 by means Specification of Letters Patent.

of any form of concealed hinge 6, is a cover plate 7. This cover plate 7 has a plurality of openings 8 corresponding to the openings 5 in the cover 2. The cover plate 7 is slightly beveled at its inner surface to leave room for a seal 9, which may be of any suitable form and material but is preferably paper. This seal 9 is adapted to receive the signatures of persons who are supposed to have access to the safety deposit box. The cover plate 7 has a pair of latches 10, which are of any suitable form and are adapted to engage a cross-piece 11, secured to the locking bolt 3. These latches 10 are adapted to be locked to the cover 2 by means of the crosspiece 11 when the bolt 3 locks the cover 2 to the safety deposit box. This prevents the cover plate 7 from being opened except after the cover to the safety deposit box has been opened.
Pivotally secured to the cover plate 7 in any suitable manner, such as by hinges 12, is a protector 13. This protector is adapted to cover the openings 8 in the cover plate and protect the seal from accidental dam age, and has a latch 14, which may be of any suitable form, and as shown in Fig. at is adapted to snap over the edge of the cover plate and hold it fastened to the same.
The seal 9 is held in place between the cover plate 7 and the outer face of the cover 2, by means of pins 15, which are adapted to perforate the seal and enter into sockets in the face of the cover 2.
The operation and construction of the device are easily understood from the above description.
hen the cover 2 of the box is opened, the seal 9 is put in place, and the signature of each person who has access to the safety deposit box is written over the particular key-hole opening in which said persons key is adapted to fit. The coverplate 7 is then closed upon the cover 2 and the pins 15 perforate the seal and hold it in place. The cover 2 of the box is then closed and locked and the protector 13 is snapped over upon the cover plate 7. When it is desired to open the safety deposit box, it is necessary that each person who has a key thereto shall open his particular lock. If for any reason a lock is opened by a person other than the one who has the key for that lock. the signature seal over that opening will have to be broken in order to insert the key into the lock; thus any tampering with the lock will be detected.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A seal attachment, comprising a plate having a plurality of openings there1n, a protector for said plate, and means on said plate adapted to recelve a seal.
2. A seal attachment, comprising a plate having a plurality of openings therein, a protector hinged to said plate, and means on said plate adapted to receive a seal.
