JOSEPH CARTER, on NEW YORK, 1v. Y.
CIGAR-BUTT FORMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 7, 1909.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Serial No. 488,389.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Butt Formers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to cigars, and its object is to provide certain new and useful improvements in the formation of the butt ends of cigars, whereby convenient and accurate folding and fixing of the wrapper to the butt end of a cigar is obtained, without resort to the expensive manual opera tions of cutting, shaping and pasting.
In carrying 'out the invention the butt end of the freshly made cigar is pressed into and turned in a forming recess arranged in a heated metal mold, so that the butt end is shaped and the wrapper fixed to hold the filling permanently in position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved mold; and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The mold A is in the form of a metal block secured to a rim B, adapted to rest on top of an electric or other heater C of any approved construction, the rim B having openings B for the circulation of air between the top of the heater C and the under side of the mold A. In the upper face of the mold A are formed mold recesses D, curved to the rounded-off shape to be given to the butt end of the cigar E placed with the butt end into a recess D and pressed down therein, and turned by the operator havin hold of the cigar, so that the butt end of the freshly made cigar comes in contact with the heated Wall of the recess D and is thus given the desired shape. Directly above the mold A is arranged a rack F in the form of a plate disposed parallel to the upper face of the mold A, the plate being attached to posts G extending upward from the mold A. The rack F is provided with apertures F in vertical alinement with the mold recesses D so as to support the cigars in upright position, as indicated in Fig. 2.
In practice, the operator having hold of the freshly made cigar passes the butt end of the cigar through an opening F, to finally bring the butt end into the corresponding mold recess D, and then the operator gives one, two or more turns to the cigar, and at the same time presses the latter slightly downward, so that the butt end is shaped by contact with the recess wall, and then the operator releases the cigar and leaves the same in position for about two minutes, so that the butt end becomes fixed. The cigar is then removed. In practice, a temperature of from 220 to 230 Fahrenheit is required in the mold A.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the freshly made cigar need not be cut at the butt end, and the usual forming and pasting operation by hand is entirely dispensed with.
As it requires but a short time to produce the desired result with the use of the mold described, it is evident that a large number of cigars can be completed in a comparatively short time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cigar butt former comprising a metal block having in the upper face thereof a plurality of recesses for forming the cigar butt, a rim secured to the block, a heater upon which the rim rests, said rim extending below the block whereby to space the same apart from the heater, and a rack supported on the block above the same and having openings registering with the recesses.
2. A cigar butt former comprising a metal block having in the upper face thereof a plurality of recesses for forming the cigar butt, a rim secured to the block, and a heater upon which the rim rests, said rim extending below the block whereby to space the same apart from the heater.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH CARTER.
