PAPER-BOX MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 637,152, dated November 14, 1899.

To all whom, it may concer-7c:
Be it known that I, ROBERT OSANG, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 65 Blumenstrasse, Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Manufacture of Cardboard and Like Boxes or Cases and to Apparatus Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of cardboard and like boxes or cases and to apparatus therefor, comprising a machine for bending the lateral Yparts of such boxes to a round or hollow shape. This machine enables the stamped blank for a cardboard and like box to be bent round at the sides in such a manner that sharp angular edges at the long sides of theebox will be entirely obviated and that in lieu thereof perfectly-rounded semicircular sides are formed, such as are desirable for many purposes, preferably for pocket and case-like receptacles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a longitudinal section of the improved machine, the die being turned down. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Fig. 3, a front view Fig. 4 is a plan showing the blank of a cardboard box prior to the bending. Fig. 5 represents a nside view of a blank after-the rounding has taken place. Fig. 6 is a detail showing an under side view of the die elevated above the table b. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the die, showing the grooves r and the corresponding projections s on the table b.
Upon the frame or under part a bears the table b, on which the two slides c c are arranged to move, such slides having each onehalf CZ or d' of a matrix secured to them. This movement of the halves of the matrix relatively to each other, whereby the bending or rounding ofthe box is effected, takes place by the aid of crank disks or wheels B, which are xed upon the shaft A on the two sides of the machine, being adapted to be moved to the right or left by means of the lever H and transmitting their movement to the slides through the medium of the connecting-i'ods Serial No. 686,857. (No model.)
K, thereby causing the two halves of the matrix to move toward or away from one another.
In the middle of the table is supported the die e, fitted to be turned up and down on the hinge l betweenthe separated halves d d of the matrix and furnished with a handle g. On this die is fixed a tube f, (shown semicircular in Fig. 3,) having a hollow cylindrical body 0, within which a pointed fiame, entering' at m from burner P, impinges against the die underneath and heats the same. tube f may be furnished with any suitable lmeans to provide a sufficient draft for the flame. In the presentinstance I have shown it apertured. At its other end, terminating in a rod, the die is furnished with an aperture or slot h, with which a guide-pin 1l engages during the downward movement of said die in order to prevent a lateral deviation of the same and to insure its proper position during the pressing operation.
Each of the two h'alves of the matrix may consist of several parts, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, wherein the slides and the respective halves of the matrix are shown united by plates q q. By this means it is pdssible to gage the recesses in the matrix which correspond to thebottom and cover parts a: y of the box at the ends of the several parts, so that by the greater or smaller distance of said parts :c y from each other the recesses in the matrix may be increased or diminished and may thus be-rendered suitable for broader or narrower bottom and cover parts. It is therefore, also, possible to effect the grooving or scoring of the' bottom and cover parts, which are to be bent up at an angle, at the same time as the rounding of the lateral parts,the matrix being provided with corresponding grooves r and the table b with projections s, Figs. 6 and 6a, registering with said grooves.

grooves at the same time, the stop-pieces an are arranged so as to correspond exactly to the width of the stamped bottom and cover parts, the said stop-pieces fitting in the recess of the blank. Then the hot die is pressed down by its handle, thereby forcing the blank against the table. y By the downward movement of the lever H the matrix is closed upon the die by means of the slides-'that is to say, its two halves are moved toward each other, so that they embrace the die by their cavities and impart to the cardboard, pasteboard, or the like placed between them the desired semicircular curved form. It is evident that by the employment of higher matrices and dies cardboard and like boxes or cases having lateral parts of any desired height may be rounded.
What I claim is-- l. A machine for forming curved sides of cardboard and like boxes or cases, embodying a pair of slides displaceable relatively to each other, a divided matrix carried thereby, with its component parts displaceable with the slides and relatively to each other, means for actuating said slides, a die adapted to move up and down within said matrix when the latter is separated, with means for rendering said die immovable and for heating ,2 damse the same, and stops fn n fixed to the slides and engaging with a recess in the matrix for accurately introducing and holding the blank to be rounded, substantially as set forth.

In combination, a pair of slides c c', adapted to b'e displaced. relatively to each other,- a two-part matrix carried thereby, with its halves secured to either slide and displaceable therewith relatively to each other, said halves of the matrix being opened and closed by the movement of the slides, a shaft A, crank-disks carried at either end thereof, connecting-rods, adapted to transfer motion fronl said shaft to the slides, a die adapted to move' up and down within said matrix when the lat-- ter is separated, with means for rendering said die immovable and for heating the same, and stops n n fixed to the slides and engaging with a recess in the matrix for accurately introducingand holdingthe blank to be round'- ed, substantially as illustrated and described.
