Description

waited swa fitment can.
Letters Patent No. 94,S29,-dated September 14,1869.
IMPROVED seen-BALANCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB G. J onus, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of lhIaryland, have invented a new and improved Sash-Balance; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being, had to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part "of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a section, through line a: z of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a rear view.
This invention consists in the use, in connection with the usual spring-device for balancing sashes, of an adjusting-device, \vhereby'the tension of'the spring can be varied to suit the different sizes-of sashes to be balanced.
In the drawings a is the lower-sash cord;
1) is a guide-pulley, over which it runs;
0 is a spool-pulley, on which it Winds (Z is the shaft of pulley c;
c is a small pinion on shaft (I;
f is a stationary shaft or rod, parallel to shaft'd;
g is a large pinion running loosely on shaft f, and gearing with pinion e,-
his a disk, parallel to wheel g, and also running loosely on shaftf;
z t i are rods connecting disk It to wheel 9 k is a spring coiled around and attached to shaft f,
inside of the rods i 12 i, and at its outer end attached to one of said rods, and
J is the casing or supporting-plate of the apparatus, all being constructed and arranged as shown in the drawings. I
For the upper-sash cord, a duplicate of .the abovedescribed apparatus is arranged in the same-casing or housing, which is made in the proportions and form shown, for that special purpose.
The end of shaft j may project through the supporting-plate, and be squared off, so that a key will tit upon it, by ,which the shaft can be turned, so as to adjust the tension of spring 70 to any degree required.
The whole apparatus is simple, cheap, and compact, and can be applied to any style of sash.
I am aware that it is not new to balance windowsashes by means of clock and other springs, and I do not wish to he understood as laying claim to such invention; but
Having fully described my invention,
What I do ciaim as new, is
The sash-balance herein described, consisting essentially of the adjustable shaft 1, gear-wheel g, spring It, shaft (7, pinion e, and pulleys b, all constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
