To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, MAURICE VEII', a citizen or the United States, and a resident ol' the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of'New York, have invented a new and improved Artilicial Aigret and Like Article, of which the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object et the invention is to provide a new and improved artificial ornament, such as an aigret, plume, feather-hat and dress trimming, millinery ornament, hair ornament and the like, and formed from a sheet ot Celluloid or other material, and arranged to provide graceful lilaments projecting integrally from a self sustaining core.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part ot this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a side elevation of the inr provement in the form oit' an aigret having straight filaments; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improvement in the :term of a plume having drooping laments; Fig. lis aface view of the blank for forming an aigret; Fig. 5 is a like view of a blank forming a. plume; Fig-6 is a cross section of a fiat blank for forming an ornament having straight filaments; and Fig. 7' is a like view ot a. curved blank for forming an ornament having drooping filaments.

The artificial ornament illustrated in Figs. il. and 2 consists of a stem A and filaments B extending integrally from the stem, the latter being in the form of a tube, formed by winding up spirally a band A', as shown in Fig. i, the layers oi the stem being fastened together by a suitable cement orother ad hesivc substance.

In order to form the ornament, use is made ot a blank such as shown in Fig. 4t, the blank being in the form of a sheet of Celluloid or a like material, cut from one side to within a short distance of the other, to form the fila ments B and the band A', the cuts being made parallel one to the other but diagonally across the sheet, so that when the band A is wound up spirally, as shown in Fig. 2,

then the filaments B extend integrally from the upper edge of the band in the form of an aigret. t

It it is desired to form a plume, as shown in Fig. 3, then use is made ot a blank, formed. of a sheet otcelluloid or the like, cut from one side to within a distance of the other to form the lilaments B2 and the band A2, the band being wound up straight to torni a tubular stem it, from the upper edges of the layers of which extend the iilaments B3.

Now by making the sheet from which the blank is produced tiat, as indicated in Fig. @,straight lilaments Bt and a straight band ."r: is produced, but the sheet may be curved. as in F 7, to produce curved tilaments B5 and a corresponding band It, so that when this blank is formed into an aigret or plume or other article the iilaments are drooping, as indicated in Fig. 3.

lt is understood that in cutting the sheet of material in the manner described, n one of the material is lost, as the cuts are made parallel to torni filaments, ranging one alongside the other, either diagonally `with the band, as shown in F Ll, or at a right angle thereto, as indicated in Fig.

lt is also understood that ter forming articles with straight filaments, the sheet et Celluloid or a. like material is flat, while for making ornaments with drooping filaments the sheet is curved transversely prior to cut ting.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that by the method described, artiiicial ornaA ments, such as aigrets, plumes, feathers, hair ornaments and the like can he readily and cheaply produced.

l-laving thus described my invention, ll claim as new and desire to secure by lfietters Patent:

As an article ot' manufacture, an artificial ornament consisting of a sheet ot material having one edge thereof slit to torni lilaments, the said band being wound upon itself spirally to form a support cylindrical in its cross section tor the filaments, and an adhesive substance between the windings for securing them together.
