Description
M. E. INGRAM. KNIFE AND soxssons SHABPBNER. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 7, 1909.

FFICE MILO E. INGRAM, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 7, 1909.
Patented Feb. I, 1910.
Serial No. 511,782.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO E. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife and Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to knife and scissor sharpeners, and the object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device that will provide a knife or scissor blade with a sharp edge, the device being constructed to prop erly position the knife or scissor blade during the sharpening operation, whereby the edge of the blade will be ground at the proper angle.
The invention further aims to provide a durable and inexpensive sharpener that can be supported upon a table or wall, the sharpener being equipped with an adjustable and detachable grinding or filing piece that can be renewed without discarding the remainder of the device.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a practical embodiment of my invention, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the sharpener, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the sharpener, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the sharpener as mounted upon a wall or vertical support, and, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sharpener.
In the drawings 1 denotes a base substantially rectangular in plan, said base having the opposite sides thereof recessed, as at 2, thereby saving material and providing finger grips facilitating the positioning of the base upon a suitable support, as a table 8 or a wall 4.
The base 1 is provided adjacent one end with a large opening 5, and near the opposite with its support, as the table 8 or the wall 4. Any suitable fastening means can be used in lieu of the screw 8.
The upper end of the tubular post 7 is provided with diametrically opposed recesses 9, serving functionally as guide ways for the blade 10 of a knife or pair of scissors. In the post 7 is adjustably and detachably mounted a file 11 or a strip of serrated hardened metal which will serve as a file or sharpening medium. The file 11 is arranged in the tubular post 7 with the plain sides thereof confronting the recesses 9, whereby when the blade 10 is placed in the recesses 9 and moved back and forth, the edge of the blade 10 will engage the toothed or serrated edge of the file 11.
A set screw 12 is mounted in the tubular post 7 for holding the file 11 therein and in an adjusted position. It will be observed that the file 11 can be renewed while the body of the device is retained for further use.
While in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the structural details thereof as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having now described my invention, what- I claim as new, is
In a tool sharpener, a substantially rectangular base provided adjacent each end with an opening therethrough, a tubular post mounted in one of said openings, the other of said openings receiving means for securing the base to a support, said post at its upper end provided with oppositely disposed recesses, the walls of which curve from each end to the center of the recesses, a sharpening element fitted in the post, and a set screw carried by the post for securing the sharpening element in adjusted position in the post.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MILO E. INGRAM.
Witnesses:
W. J. MGGILLEN, THEODORE C. H. KEEN.
