LOCOMOTIVIE-TRUGK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD D. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of locomotive trucks or bogies in which provision is made for permitting relative lateral movement of the truck center plate in passing into or out of curves; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, the novel features of which are specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a locomotive truck embodying myinvention, taken on the line 1-1 of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan view with a portion of the center-plate broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the lines 33 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 41 is a cross-sectional view of the transom on the line 4t4.- of Figs. 1 and 2, showing the depending spring-carrier portion of the center-plate.
The drawings show a locomotive truck of ordinary general construction; the front and rear axles 2 and 3 having journal boxes 4 guided in pedestals 6, 6, on the side frames 7 of the truck, which latter is carried on said axles through springs 8 and equalizing beams 9 as usual; and said frames being connected transversely and provided with a center-plate upon which the saddle-piece 10 of the locomotive frame (indicated in dotted lines) is pivotally carried.
My invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the frametransom and center-plate of the truck, as hereafter described, the main object in view being to provide for securing in an improved manner the relative lateral movement of the center-plate arleady referred to and which is recognized as requisite to proper curving.
The transom 15, as shown, is an integrally formed member, rigidly connected at the sides 16, 16 thereof with the respective side frames 7, 7, and forming a receptacle between the frames for the laterally movable truck center-plate with its centering springs,
and the carrier means therefor, which are mounted upon it. The portion of the transom extending between the frames, c0mprises, as shown, a depressed bottom plate 17 Specification of Letters Patent.

having a transverse slot 18 forming a guideway for the truck-center pin 19; transversely arranged carrier tracks for the center-plate adjacent the front and rear transom walls 241: and 25 respectively and consisting preferably of separately formed rails 22, 23 rigidly secured to the transom, said walls 21 and 25 forming front and rear guide ways between which the center-plate is movable laterally; and opposite side abutments 26, 27 which serve as stops to such n'lovement.
The truck center-plate 30, which is centrally recessed to pivotally engage the sad dle piece 10 and provided with a central opening for the passage of the usual centerpin 19, is rectangular in form exterior-1y as shown and loosely located between the front and rear guide ways 24:, 25 of the transom while movably carried upon the front and rear track rails 22, 23 of the latter; the weight resting directly, as shown, upon the interposed rollers 4-0 hereafter referred to. The center plate 30 is thus capable of moving freely cross-wise of the truck excepting as such movement is controlled by the spring mechanism with which the plate is provided and which will now be described.
The plate 30 as shown, is formed with depending spring- carriers 31, 31. These car riers are spaced-apart so as to locate the laterally compressible springs 32, 32, which are mounted therein respectively forward of and rearward of the center-pin 19 and between the latter and the respective tracks 22, 23; and a single follower plate 33 is provided, as shown, at each end of said springs, which plate spans the space between the springs and bears against the side abutments or stops 26, 27 of the transom. The effect being that the lateral movement of the center-plate 30 will be limited and controlled by the resilience of said springs, and a constant tendency be exerted thereby to return it to normal central position.
Free lateral. movement of the center-plate 30, against the spring resistance, is permitted, as shown, to the extent of practically closing together the coils of the springs 32, openings ll being provided in the sidewall of the transom so as to clear the depending spring-carrier portions 31 of the plate. The anti-friction rollers 40 interposed in series between the movable plate and the respective tracks 22, 23, are mounted as shown in separate yokes 12 so as to be positively spaced and enable convenient assembling. The maintenance of these series of yoked rollers in approximately central position beneath the movable plate 80 is insured, as shown, by the confining of the same between the walls of the transom so as to limit their lateral movement to substantially that of the plate itself. The essential features of my invention may 0bviously be retained without adhering in all respects to the specific construction shown and described.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a swivel truck a frame transom having laterally extending center-plate guide ways and side spring-plate abutments, in combination with a laterally movable: centerplate having depending springcarrier means, and springs mounted in said carriermeans and having follower plates bearing against said transom abutments.
2. In a swivel truck, a frame transom having transverse center-plate and center-pin guide-ways with spaced-apart carrier tracks for said plate and side abutme'nts to limit the center-plate movement, in combination with a laterally movable center-plate having spaced apart spring carriers depending therefrom, springs mounted in the respective carriers, and follower plates bearing against said transom abutments.
3. In a swivel truck, a frame transom having transverse center-plate and center-pin guide-ways with spaced-apart carrier tracks for said plate and intermediate side abutments to limit the center-plate movement in combination with a laterally movable ce'nter-plate having spaced apart spring-carriers depending therefrom between said center-pin guide-way and the respective tracks, and springs mounted in the respective earriers and having follower plates bearing intermediately against said transom abutments.
4. In a swivel truck, a frame transom having transverse center-plate and center-pin guide-ways with spaced-apart carrier tracks for said plate and side abutments to limit the center-plate movement, in combination with a laterally movable center-plate having spaced apart spring-carriers dependingtherefrom between said center-pin guideway and the respective tracks, springs mounted in the respective carriers and having follower plates bearing against said transom abutments, roller devices interposed between said plate and the respective carrier tracks, and means for positively limiting the lateral movement of said roller devices.
I11 testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
