' Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. ARNOLD', citizen of the [United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a-YCOmbinedl xSafety.-Razor and Strop'per, of which the following is a specification. x

llFhi's invention relates to improvements in safety razors and the object is to provide a device in which a doubleedged blade is re movably held between two plates 'and capable of being incased in a. tubular handle when not in use.

`'llhe present invention is intended more particularly as an improvement on the device shown and described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 838,7 67, issued to me vunder date of Uctober 23rd, 1906, in'which is'shown a device having a double edged blade' held between a double edged guard and a backing plate, so that while both cuttingedges of the blade could be used as safety razors, only one side of the instrument 'could be -presented to the face While the instrument was held in the same hand. In order to use the opposite edgelof the blade it was necessary to'open the device, remove the bladel and re-` place it in reverse position.- In my present device the blade is held betweena guard plate and a backing plate, veach of` which is formed along one edge-with the usual means Y for presenting the razor edge to ythe face'under guarded` or sO-caljled safety condit1onls;.;thatis, the guard is formed with a series of teeth and the backingplate approaches 'the edges of saidteeth more orless closely. Theopposite longitudinal` edges of both'plates in the present instance are concaved, so that the cutting edge lof the razor along that'side .will project considerably bev shown in the drawing,.in which lTigure l 1s a longitudinal sectional view yond said plates, and presenting the cutting edge of the blade` unguarded, thus producing in a single device, a safety razor and, a

s o-called,unguarded or exposedblade razor.

The invention is more fully described in the following Ispecification A and clearly v.of my razor. Fig. 2 isa planvievrsho'wing t e guard plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the backing plate.

The numeral-3 designates the guard plate` and tthe backing pla-te, each of which is provided at one Vend with a hinge member 5 by means of which they are hinged together. At their opposite ends the platesare formed with half-round screw-'threaded vstems 6 and adapted to be engaged and held together by. the 'plug' 2 which is screw-threaded inter- "stantially one-half of- 'the "blade surface.

The backing plate 4 is concaved along one of its edges to a degree that will allow it to lie,

more or less closely along the line of the' guard teeth 9, whilethe opposite edge is concaved to lie along the same line as the concavededg of the giiard plate. By this construction the blade alon the one side is exposedl about oneThalf of' its width, is unguarded and capable of .use as an ordinary or exposed blade razqr.

d `With my present device the unguarded edge may be used for shaving portions 'of` the face where the operator does not feel the need of a safety device; and it is also useful'to beginners as it will permit of shaving .with the unguarded edge on such por-- tions of the face as are easy to shave, while themere turning or' reversing of the instrument will 4instantly ysupply the safety razor when needed.

.It is evident that the device, while capable .0f double use, can be fused exclusively as a safety Viaor,`for as a razor of ordinary construction, with an unguarded blade, and that in either case, the blades, may be reversed so .that both cutting edges thereof may be used. Itis also evident that my device may be used as a stropper, or holder for the blade' while being stropped or honed, asthe exposedbr unguarded edge of the blade 'is heldin exactlyl the proper position' for honing and stropping, and a reversal of the blade will of course allow both edges to be thus honed:

Having thus fully described my Vinvention whatI claim and desire to secure by Letters 4 Patent is In a.co1nbined safety razorand blade 'Ist'roppen a double edged blade; a guard backing plate in such manner .that one eutting edge is guarded while the other is en posed and unguarded; a screw plug for securing together said plates and a handle adapted to incase the entire device.
