To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLnMnNTiNo RoMANo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hunting-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hunting-knives and particularly to knives of this type in which the blade is longer than the handle and a guard is provided for the point of the blade, so that the knife can be carried in the pocket without danger of cutting the clothing or person.
The principal object of my invention is to so construct the knife that the guard is automatically folded into the handle when the blade is opened, and is automatically opened when the blade is folded into the handle.
The construction of my improved knife will now be described, in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the knife open, with one of the handle side-plates re moved. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the knife closed. Fig. 3 is a front view of the knife open. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the links, and Fig. 5 1s a perspective view of one of the side-plates.
The handle is made as usual, consisting of side-plates 1 of sheet-metal, to which are secured slabs 2 of horn or other suitable ornamental material.
The blade 3 is pivoted at 4 in the forward end of the handle, than which it is of greater length, and is provided with a recess 5 in its shank, in which engages the projection 6 on the free end of the flat spring 7, which is secured in the handle in the usual way, as by the pivot 8 and pin 9. The free end of the spring has the lateral projections 10 to facilitate its retraction with the hand.
Pivoted at 11 near the rear end of the handle is the guard 12, which, as shown, consists of two curved pieces of sheet-metal, secured together, and provided at their free end with the spring clip 13, to engage and hold the point of the blade when the latter is folded into the handle, or closed. This construction of the guard is merely one Specification of Letters Patent.

which may be used, as I do not desire to limit myself to the exact form shown and described. I
Two pieces of metal 14; shaped as shown in Fig. 2, are secured to the forward ends of the side-plates 1, beyond the ends of the slabs 2, to complete the crossbar formed by the tops of the links, now to be described.
The blade and guard are connected by links 15, the same being pieces of sheet-metal of the shape shown in Fig. 4, pivoted at 16 to the shank of the blade beyond its pivot, and having pins 17 projecting laterally from near their other ends, which pins engage in curved slots 18, formed in the guard in front of its pivot. These slots are so shaped that the action of opening the blade will fold the guard into the handle, and vice versa.
The links 15 have recesses 19 in their sides near the forward ends, which fit over the lugs 20 of the pieces 14: secured to the sideplates 1, when the blade is open In practice, to open the knife, the blade is grasped in the finger and thumb and pulled away from the handle, and, as it is swung into its open position, the guard is automatically folded into the handle. in the same way, as the blade is folded into the handle, the guard is swung outwardly in position to engage the point of the blade.
It will now be seen that I provide, by my invention, a hunting-knife which can be used with perfect safety as well as carried in the pocket with security against accident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A knife comprising a handle, a blade pivoted to one end thereof and a guard pivoted to the other end thereof, and means connecting the blade and guard, whereby the latter is closed as the blade is opened and opened as the blade is closed.
2. A knife comprising a handle, a blade of greater length than the handle pivoted to one end thereof, a guard for the point of the blade pivoted to the other end of the handle and connections between said blade and guard, whereby the latter is closed as the blade is opened and opened as the blade is closed.
3. A knife comprising ahandle, a blade of greater length than the handle pivoted to one end thereof, a guard for the point of the blade pivoted to the other end of the handle and links pivotally connected to both the blade and guard, whereby the latter is closed as the blade is opened and opened as the blade is closed.
4. A knife comprising a handle, a blade of greater length than the handle pivoted to one end thereof, a guard for the point of the blade pivoted to the other end of the handle and links pivoted to the blade near its shank and having a pin-and-slot connection with the guard, whereby the latter is closed as the blade is opened and opened as the blade is closed.
