JENNINGS SCOTT MCCOMB, 0F DOBBS FERRY, NEW YORK.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER AND PUNCH.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNINGS Soor'r Mc- Gone, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders and Punches, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly to a binder which is adapted to prepare loose leaf sheets or papers to be filed in the binder.
In the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of this invention and on which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on a line 2-2 of Fig. 1, some parts being shown in side elevation for the purpose of better illustration. Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a modified attachment. Fig. 4- is a vertical section showing another modified form of attachment. Fig. 5 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation showing another modified form. Fig. 6 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section showing a different manner of attaching the punch to the binder.
In the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing, 1 is a loose leaf binder of any construction, having the back 2 and cover 3 and loose leaf pages 4.
The user of such a binder very often objects to paying the increased cost of prepared sheets cut and sold for the difiierent makes of binders. To avoid this additional expense, I have provided means whereby the user can buy paper to fit the binder and himself form the necessary filing apertures in the sheets or papers.
My invention is an attachment which may be sold with any loose leaf binder now on the market, or which may be sold separately to be attached to any such binder now on the market or in use.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown my attachment secured to a loose leaf binder having extensible posts 5, 5. In place of the usual securing members to hold the cover 3 upon the post 5, 5 I secure the cover 3 by means of dies 6 and 22, the lower portion of the Specification of Letters IEatent.

dies being reduced at 7 and screw threaded to cooperate with the internal screw threads upon one of the sections of the post 5, Fig. 2. At the other end I form a punch of any approved construction 8 to cooperate with apertures 9, 9 in a lever 1.0, pivoted at one end 11 upon a pin 12 secured in a bracket 13 which in turn may be permanently or detachably secured to the cover 3 of the loose leaf binder.
In the preferred construction, I secure the bracket 13 to the cover by means of a screw 14. passing through the cover 3 and co'tiperating with a nut 15, it being understood, of course, that two such screws or nuts are used, although only one is illustrated in the figures. The other end 16 of the lever 10 is provided with any suitable lock which as shown is a bell crank lever 17 pivoted upon the pivot 18, one end of the lever 19 acting as a finger hold and the other end 20 being formed into a detent to cooperate with the under surface of the knurled portion 21 of the punch 22.
The spring 23 normally holds the detent 20 in its operative position with relation to the knurled surface 21 of the die 22, the lever 10 being released by pressing upon the finger hold 19 to permit the lever to be brought into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the leaves or sheets of paper are adapted to be punched in an obvious manner by the lever cooperating with the punches 6 and 22.
Instead of the punches such as 6 and 22 I may use a detachable punch such as 2 1, Fig. 3 which is internally screw threaded and adapted to codperate with the externally screw threaded portion 25, upon one of the sections of the post 5, Fig. 3; or one of the sections of the post 5 may be formed with a screw threaded portion 26 and an integral punch 27, which is adapted both to punch the holes in the papers and to cooperate with the locking nut 33, Fig. 1, the nut being removed to permit the papers to be punched and again screwed upon the section to bind the cover 3.
The punch may be given a slightly differ- 29 and a screw threaded portion 30 to screw into one of the sections of the post 5, the sharp point 31 being adapted to puncture the papers in an obvious manner. Instead of securing the punch to the post of a loose leaf binder, I may in some instances fasten it to the cover as shown in Fig. 6 where the punch 81 is riveted to the cover 82.
Having thus described this invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claim.
The combination in a loose leaf binder, of extensible posts in the binder, a detachable bracket secured to the binder, an apertured lever pivoted in the bracket, punches provided at one end with reduced external screw threaded portions and at the other end with a punching surface, the screw threads to cooperate with female screw threads on the extensible posts, a bell crank lever carried by the apertured lever having a finger piece and a detent, the latter adapted to co operate with one of the punches to hold the lever to the same.
