To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosIAH It. Kroner, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said draw ings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and particularly to that class in which the strap is gripped by a roll.
The object of the invention is to improve the gripping properties of the buckle and simplify the construction; and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim. This buckle may be used with straps of leather, fabric or other suitable material according to the purposes for which they are to be used, and are adapted for various purposes, such as trunk straps, bell straps, skate straps, belts, etc.
In carrying out my invention I employ a housing consisting of a base 2 having a rearwardly extending end 3 formed with a slot 1 by which the buckle may be attached to a strap 5 or other device. The housing has side walls 6 and 7, front wall 8 and rear wall 9, and the top is cut away to form a clearance opening. In each of the side walls 7 and 8 are grooves or channels 11 to receive and support the ends of two independently movable rollers 12 and 13. Preferably and as herein shown, the rear roller 13 is larger in diameter than the front roller 12. The front wall 8 is formed with a transverse slot 14, and the rear wall 9 with a trans verse slot 15 for the passage of a strap. The end of the strap 16 is entered through the front wall and passing rearward may be readily drawn beneath the rollers 12 and 131 This strap is passed through the housing to its adjusted position, then movement in the reverse direction draws the rollers 12 and 13 toward the front wall of the housing, and owing to the inclination of the grooves 01 the top of the housing and the fact that both rollers are mounted in a single groove, these rollers are pressed or crowded down upon the strap so as to clamp it against the base. By employing two rollers one crowds the other, and by engaging with each other are less liable to accidentally free the strap; and furthermore with two rollers the strap is gripped at two points so that the holding qualities of the buckle are increased. When it is desired to release the strap, these rollers may be readily forced rearward by a finger entering through the opening in the top of the housing, thus lifting them away from the strap or relieving the pressure thereon, so that the strap may be readily withdrawn.
I claim A buckle comprising a housing through which a strap may be passed, a single longi tudinal groove in each side of said housing, two independently movable rollers bearing at their ends in said grooves, said rollers of different diameters and adapted to be crowded down upon the strap and against each other.
