To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we. PAUL P. Panties and Pizucr M. llanmx, citizens of the United States. residing at Mile, in the county of l-iscataquis and State of Maine, have invented certain new" and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fastenings, of which the following is a specificatitm.
This invention rclatest'o certain new and useful ii'nprovements in car door fastenings.
The invention has 'mrticular reference to that class of seal fastenings or locks employed on sliding freight-car doors.

These walls are shaped to closely fit the carside 2 and the door step 3, as illustrated in Fig. 2., lVithin the casing 4 .is pivoted a latch 7,by means of a vertical pin 8 passing through the top and bottom walls 5 and (S ofthe casing, the pin being secured by its head and by a cotter pin 9 concealed within the casing.
The latch is normally pressed toward the car door and side by means of a spring 1-0, the free end thereof engaging thefront wall of the casing and the intermediate portion 10 bearing against and straddling the latch,

Midway of its length, the latch is bent outwardly thereby providing a substantially right angular portion 11 which oftsets the pivoted and free ends 12 and -12 respectively of the latch so that the latch will straddle the door stop 3, said'stop beingslightly cut away as at 14. to accommodate the latch. It will be noted that the latch and hasp swing in arcs of different radii, and inasmuch as the saidlatch and hasp are connected together by arm 20 for simultaneous movement and cooperation, it is necessary to compensate 'for such difference in movement, hence the pivoted end of the hasp is slotted as at 28 and it is through this slot; that the said pivot pin 22 passes.
To secure the hasp in its loc ring position, a. hook-shaped locking pin 30 is provided, the free-end of which passes through the eye of the staple member 27. The hooked .portion of the locking pin is provid d with apertures 31 through which the s al wire 32 passes to close the open end of said hooked portion. The opposite end of the lot-kingpin 30 passes through an opening 33 in the said strike-plate l5 and is provided with a ball 34; of greater diameter than that of the opening33, said ball being received in a socket 35 formed in the car door. means of this ball and socket mounting-for the locking pin, a free swiveling movement of the latter is permitted to facilitate its being properly and easily ins'erted'through the eye of the staple member 27.

The operation of the device is as. follows: Upon closing the door the rounded corner 16 of the strike-plate will engage the rounded nose 1? of the latch and elevate the latch.
