To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that we, DAVID T. BJonK and Y S. WILLIs, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain4 new and useful Improvements in following is a specication.

'llhisl invention relates to improvements in receptacles and more particularly ci ar ash receivers., and the primary'object of t e same is to provide an improved device of this character provided with a Vlid or closure which latter, when opened,`will forma support for the cigar.

A further object is to provide improved means for locking the closure closed and improved means for releasing Vand automatically opening the closure for use.

A further object is to provide improved means for emptying the receiver.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which .will be simple,

durable and cheap in construction, and effective and ecient in o eration.

Referring more particularly to the -drawing and in the present exemplication of the able support such as a table top-or the like which 1s provided with an opening 11 there-A through, beneath which the receptacle is secured. The receptacle comprises a body portion 12 which is secured in position below the aperture or` opening 11 by means of a `is inserted within the openinlg danged portion 13, whlch rests against the A removable bottom 16 is provided for the` receptacle, which bottom is itself'constructed in the form of a receptacle and is provided with a plurality of spring ngers or clips 17 projecting above theupper edge of the bottom .so that when the bottom is placed in y `positlon on the body of the receptacle the' spring fingers or clips17 will engage over the beaded portion 15 on the body of the receptacle for detachably securing thehottom in position. A frame having a body portion 18 and a laterally projecting circumferential ange 19 at one end `,of the frame is provided and 11 in the support Vso that tlie flange 19 t ereof will rest upon the face of the support, and if desired, the face of the support may be cut away or countersunk to receive the flange to permit the upper face of the Harige to stand flush with the face of the support. The frame 18 is provided with an ofi'-v set portion 30Y in the formv of a. chamber 31 having a closed bottom 32, and this offset portion -is preferably located adjacent the longitudinal center of one of the lids and is provided with an aperture or opening 33 in one of the walls thereof. A hook 34 issupported by the lid adjacent the receptacle 30, which hook-is preferably se# cured Ato or formed as a part of one of the arms 35,' vwhich latter assist in supporting therespective grate bars 26 so that when the lids are moved into a closed position or the position shown in dotted lilies in Fig. 1, the hook or catch 34 will project through the opening 33V in the lwall of the chamber 31.

Arranged within the chamber 31 is a catchy 36 whlch lis pivotallysupported ask at 37 in any desired or suitable manner, preferably between two cut-out portions 38 in the wall of the chamber 31 and are bent inwardly into the chamber to' form supp'rts for the pintle 37 and between which one extremity of the catch 36 is located. Y

A push button having a head 39 and a stem 40 is arranged within the chamber 31 and the head 39 is of a size and configuration to form a closure for the chamber 31.y

The free extremity 41 of the stem is reduced to form a shoulder 42 and the reduced extremity 41 passes through an aperture in the catch 36 so thatthc shoulder 42 will rest upon the catch. An elastic member 43, such as a coil spring or the like. is provided for yieldingly supporting the catch 36 and the push lmtton 39. This elastic member is coiled around the reduced extremity 41 of the stemv40 so that one extremity will rest against the catch 36. The other extremity of the spring surrounds a projection 44 on the base 32 ofthe casing 31 and has engagement with the-base 32 to preycnt displacement of the spring.

In operation and when the lids 20 and .21 are closed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the catch 36 will engage the hook or catch 34, under the influence of the elasticity of the spring 43 and the lids will be held against the tension of the elastic members 28,' 29. When closed, the upper faces of the the push button 39 is depressed, which will move the catch 36 out lof engagement with the hook or catch 34 and against the tension of the elastic member 43. lVheu it is desired to empty the receptacle, all that is necessary is to detach the bottom 16 which may be easily done by drawing downwardly upon the same and the elastic fingers 17 will permit such removal. After the bottom has been emptied it may be readily replaced upon the receptacle.

yWhile 1n the present exemplification of the invention the receptacle is shown as being secured to a table top or support, it is to be understood that it may be secured to any other support so that the device may be transported from one place to another when desired.

In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but

A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, a cover for the receptacle comprising two sections pivoted at one edge to the receptacle` the free edges of the sections being adapted to stand in close proximity to each other over the receptacle to close the same, spaced supports on the sections of thc cover, the ends of the supports` on one section standing in close proximity to the respective supports on the other scction to form grate bars extending across the receptacle when the cover sections are o ien.

A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle, a cover for thereceptacle comprising sectionshinged atone edge to the-receptacle, the free e sections being adapted to stand in close proximity to each other over the receptacle to close the same, spaced su ports on the cover sections adapted to' project across the receptacle when the coversections are open, a single' fastening device for holding the cover closed, means for releasing the cover sections, and means for opening and holding the cover sections open when released.
