To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT LEOLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Cover Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in barrel cover fasteners, and

it is one of the objects of the invention to provide a means for looking a cover in a barrel, whereby the life and strength of the barrel will be prolonged.

Another object of the invention is to provide a means for looking a cover in a barrel in such a manner that the cover may be shifted from barrel to barrel, when either the cover or the barrel becomes worn through long continued use.

A secondary object is to protect the ship per from having the goods removed from the barrel before it reaches its destination and consignee, by sealing the said locking means.

With the above and other ends in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, specifically claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings, A indicates, in a general manner, a removable barrel head diametrically across which is attached my improved locking device. A bar 1 com prises the main body of this device the bar having one extremity bifurcated, to form a pair of arms 2 protruding beyond the edge of the head A. These arms terminate in lugs 3 which are formed with a slight upward curve, the lugs, during the operation ofmoving the head in the barrel, serving as hinges. The other extremity of this bar has formed thereon a pair of angular guides 5, in which reciprocates the bolt 4:, having at one end the upwardly bent handle 10 and at the other end a pair of arms 11, similar to those on the bar 1, at the end of which are the approximately straight lugs 6, provided with transverse orifices 7 To limit the reciprocation of the bolt there is provided at the junction of the arms 11, a stud, 12, which, when the bolt 4: is withdrawn a suflicient distance, bears against the exterior of the adjacent guide 5. In order that there may be no lateral movement of the bolt 011 the bar 1, an angular channel 16 is cut on the under surface of the bolt in which the bar is held. The top of the barrel is surrounded by the metallic hoop 13, which braces the barrel and insures a firm hold for the attaching device, the loop being provided with the oppositely disposed holes 1 1 adapted to receive the lugs on the bolt and the bar.

To place the head A in a barrel, the bolt is drawn, the lugs 2 on the bar are placed in one pair of the openings 3, the slight curve of the lugs allowing the head to be swung downwardly until the lugs of the bolts are directly opposite the remaining openings, into which they are forced, thus locking the head securely in place. To prevent the contents of the barrel from being removed or in any way tampered with, a sealing wire 15 is placed in the orifice 7, in the lugs, which when the bolt is in its looking position, extend through the hoop, and the lead seal is placed on the ends of the wires, making it impossible for the bolt to be withdrawn without removing the seal.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a vessel; a cover therefor; a bifurcated bar attached diametrically across the cover; and a bifurcated bolt slidable upon the bar; there being openings in the vessel to receive the several bifurcations.

2. A device of the class described comprising a vessel; a removable cover therefor; a bar extending diametrically across said cover; a bolt slidably mounted on one extremity of the bar; the under side of the bolt having a channel to receive the bar; and means for securing the bolt and the bar to the vessel.

3.
