To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERM'AN A. PA- QUETTE, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and the chief objects of the improvements which form the subject matter of this application are :-to provide a wrench of simple design that will be equally effective for use in holding and turning rods, pipes, nuts and other similar articles; to furnish a strong and durable appliance that can be easily and quickly adjusted to change the jaw opening, and to produce a tool of this class the adjustable jaw of which can be effectively locked in any of the positions within the range of its adjustments, the locking means being in part automatic in operation.
I accomplish the above and other useful and novel results by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, the detailed construction of the parts being disclosed in the following views Figure 1 is a side elevation of my imroved wrench showing the movable jaw ocked in operative position; Fig. 2 is a similar View with the movable aw in a different adjustment, and Fig. 3 is a top edge view, with the locking latch retracted to its disengaged position, and the end of the locking pawl broken away to disclose the box-joint beneath.
Referring to the details of the drawing the numeral 5 indicates the body of the tool which is furnished with a fixed or main jaw 6, and a suitable handle 7, said body, jaw
and handle being preferably formed in one piece. The jaw 6 has a smooth gripping face 8, and cooperating therewith is a movable jaw 9 having its rear end suitably formed with a recess or mortise 10 adapted to receive a suitable tenon 11 on the body 5, thus forming a box-joint 12, secured by a shouldered pivot screw 13. The working face of the movable jaw 9 is serrated, the teeth 14 being given a backward rake so that they will firmly grip the device placed between the jaws and prevent slipping. The said jaw 9 is adjusted in various positions relatively to the cooperating jaw by means of an elongated pawl 15 which is pivoted to the outer edge of said jaw with a box-joint 16 and secured by a shouldered pivot screw 17. The pawl 15 extends rearwardly from 5 the jaw and its rear end is curved and furnished with teeth 18 on the under side, which engage similar ratchet teeth 19 formed on the adjacent margin of the body 5, the opposing surfaces thus serrated being concentrically curved to permit of the said teeth becoming properly engaged in any position assumed by the jaw 9 since the pawl moves in an arc of a circle.
The margin of the body is cut away to form the surface for the said teeth 19 and thus a shoulder 20 is left at the rear which forms an abutment: or stop to engage the end 21 of the pawl and limit the extent to which the jaw 9 may be moved. IVhen the jaws 6 and 9 are operatively engaging the work there will be an outward thrust upon the pawl 15, and to prevent its slipping, the cooperating ratchet teeth are given such a rake that they will interlock, and the security of this engagement will be increased in proportion to the pressure. Vhen there is no pressure, however, the pawl may become easily disengaged from the teeth 19, and this gives an opportunity for readjustment. IVhen the jaws are properly set for the work in hand it is desirable to prevent accidental displacement or disengagement of the said pawl. To this end I provide a locking device which comprises a thumb latch in the form of a yoke 22, embracii'ig the body 5 and having its arms pivoted to said body at a point concentric with the curved surface 23 of the pawl 15, a pin 9-]- being driven through a hole in said body to serve as a pivot. The arrangement permits the latch to be rocked or swung over the free end of the pawl 15 and when in this position it will be impossible for the latter to become disengaged from the teeth 19, and the jaws will remain in adjusted position until released by swinging the yoke or thumb latch on its center so as to clear the pawl. The said latch may be swung to the position shown in dotted outlines in Fig. 2, a stop formed by a rounded projection or boss 25 on the body serving to keep it from falling too far back, and it may be allowed to remain in this inoperative position until the proper adjustment of the jaw 9 has been made, and then returned to its locking position. To facilitate this locking movement the upper end of the latch is provided with projecting ears or lugs 26 which form a hold for the operators fingers or thumbs.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a wrench, a body portion, a handle and a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw pivoted at the base of the fixed jaw, a pawl pivoted on the adjustable jaw, and pivoted means for locking said pawl on said body portion.
2. In a wrench, a body portion, a handle and a fixed jaw integrally formed, an adjustable jaw pivoted at the base of the fixed jaw, an adjustable pawl pivotally connected with the adjustable jaw and a latch pivoted on said body and adapted to detachably engage said pawl and hold it in adjusted position.
3. In a wrench, a body portion, a handle and a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw pivoted at the base of the fixed jaw, an adjustable pawl pivotally connected with the back of the adjustable jaw and a pivoted latch embracing said body and detachably engaging said pawl.
4. In a wrench, a body portion, a handle and a fixed jaw, said body portion having a rounded serrated portion, an adjustable jaw pivoted at the base of the fixed jaw, an adjustable pawl pivoted on said adjustable jaw and having its free end serrated and conforming to the rounded portion of said body, and means for detachably connecting the pawl and said body portion, said means pivotally mounted on the body portion.
5. In a wrench a body having a serrated curved edge, a handle and a fixed jaw extending from said body, an adjustable jaw pivoted at the junction of the body and fixed jaw, a pawl pivotally connected with the adjustable jaw and having its free end serrated and adapted to engage the curved edge of the body, a latch pivoted on the body and adapted to lock said pawl in adjusted position, and means on said body for limiting the movement of the latch in its inoperative relation to the pawl.
6. In a wrench, a body having a handle and a jaw, a jaw pivoted on the body and adjustable relative to the first named jaw, a pawl connected with the outer face of the adjustable jaw, said pawl and body having curved inter-engaging faces and clamping means mounted on said body and adapted to hold the pawl in engagement therewith.
7. In a wrench, a body having a handle, a jaw, and a toothed rounded portion on the edge corresponding with the gripping face of the jaw, a jaw pivoted at the base of the first jaw, a member connected with the back of the pivoted jaw, said member adapted to engage a plurality of the teeth on said wrench body, and means for locking said member in engagement with the wrench body.
