Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Fit].
CHARLES 'I. RASGHIOK, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL CHECKING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
TICKET-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Application filed February 15, 1909. Serial No. 473,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. RAsoHIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ticket holders and has for its primary obj ect a device of its kind which can be used for cutting or tearing tickets and causing them to indicate by the cut or tear the amount in dollars and cents of a purchase. This device in addition to providing means for apportioning a ticket by cutting or tearing also holds check blanks in readiness for use, which have a novel arrangement of digits printed thereon.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure l is a front View of a pad of debit checks showing my improved slip clip in place thereon and my novel arrangement of printing on said checks, Fig. 2 is a side view of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved holder without the pad of checks, Fig. 4 is a front view of a pad of debit checks showing the holder in place thereon, the checks and clip being of alternate form, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a number of parts of checks illustrating the manner in which the checks are adapted to be cut or torn in the preferred construction, and Fig. 6 is another perspective view of a number of parts of checks illustrating the manner in which the checks are cut or torn in the alternate construction of my invention.
In the drawings A represents a pad of debit checks such as are used in restaurants for indicating the cost of a meal and with which my improved holder is adapted to be used. The checks of the pad are all similar in form each check being printed with a similar set of figures upon its face of the following description. Between the side edges of the ticket is a Vertical column B of prime figures representing cents beginning near the foot with O and increasing at intervals of 5 up to 100 near the head of the ticket. On the right hand side of each number of the column is a group of digits indicating dollars from 0 to 2 all of the groups being similar, and on the left hand side of each number of the column is a group of digits running from O to and including a and indicating cents between the primary figures of the column B. Each figure of the column and its accompanying groups of digits are arranged in a horizontal line. Thus the ticket is made up of a column of lines of digits each line being composed of digits indicating dollars from O to 2 in regular order and cents from O to t which are common to all of the lines, and a digit belonging to a table of five in a column. The digits of the vertical column or table B are accentuated in size over the remaining digits on the ticket for convenience in picking out any combination of figures on the ticket as desired. The tickets are bound together at one end of the pad by means of a fastening 2 upon a stiff back 3.
C represents my improved slip clip which is particularly adapted for use with the ticket above described. This clip is provided with a rigid back 4 stamped or otherwise Cut out of thin sheet metal and formed with a handle 5 at one end. The end of this handle is curved back at 6 and perforated at 7 and 8 for attaching the back to a chain 9 or other suspending means as desired enabling the clip to be attached to the belt of the user. The rigid back carries a pressure blade 10 having a front straight tearing or cutting edge 11 for tearing or cutting the checks off of the pad and a rearwardly inclined, guard 12. Each end of the pressure blade is bent up to form supports 13 through which a spring wire 1 L forming a shaft passes freely. This shaft which is that portion of the wire substantially midway between its ends acts as a support on which the pressure blade is free to turn. The portions constituting the ends of the wire extending from each end of the shaft are bent back and curved into spring loops 15. The ends of the wire are rigidly secured to the back by means of clips 16 and the loops are fastened loosely to the back by eyes 17 which are formed on the side edges as an integral part of the back. The arms 18 and 1.9 of the wire at each side edge of the back are crossed as shown and with the loops form longitudinal guides for the side edges of the nad of checks.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the single piece of wire produces a spring at each side edge of the back the tendency of which is to press the pressure blade toward the back. The check pad is adapted to be held between the back and pressure blade and between the spring at each side of the back in which position it can be moved forward and backward and the pressure blade adjusted to the figures printed upon the upper check of the pad. hen the pad is moved forward the guard 12 turns the stubs of the checks back and out of the way. The pressure between the pressure blade and back is suflicient to cause engagement between the slip clip and pad so that the latter can be carried by the slip clip and the blade easily adjusted to the debit amounts on the checks. The blade is used for tearing the checks below a line of digits, and for the purpose of tearing the checks both above and below a line is provided an auxiliary pair of tearing blades D and E, the blade D being adapted for tearing otl' portions of the check having digits which indicate cents and the blade E portions of the check which indicate dollars. The blades D and E are substantially similar in construction the one being provided with an extension toward the left and the other with an extension 21 to- 'ard the right. Each auxiliary blade has a horizontal. cutting edge 22, an oblique cutting edge 23 and a rearwardly extending support 2 1, the latter being freely mounted to slide laterally upon the shaft 14-. The support 24- of each auxiliary clip is formed with a forwardly and upwardly inclined thumb piece 25 by which the auxiliary blade can be pressed down firmly with its cutting edge adjusted over the check to cause the check to tear on an irregular line and to segregate a portion of the column B and of the dollar and cents digits below the remain ing portion on the free end of the ticket. As the clip is adjusted to the checks in Fig. 1 the amount which is indicated upon the check when torn by the cutting blades as set would be $1.43 the smallest amount remaining in the dollar and. cents groups of digits indicating to the purchaser the amount of the bill to be paid. The portions 22 of the cutting edges on the auxiliary blades D and E may be vertical or nearly vertical as desired.
In Fig. 5 the manner in which the checks are adapted to be torn is illustrated, the upper check 26 being torn on a straight line and indicating the auxiliary cutters not being used to accomplish this result. The ticket 27 is shown to indicate $2.90 the main cutting blade 10 and the right hand cutting blade E being employed for making this tear. The ticket 28 is shown to represent $2.93 both the main and auxiliary blades being employed for making this tear.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. i the tickets of the stub are printed without any dollar marks and the auxiliary cutting blade E is not employed on the holder. The printing on the face of the tickets shown runs from five cents to seventy five cents the portion of the checks above the digits when segregated being employed to indicate the latter amount. In Fig. 6 the manner in which the main cutting blade 10 and auxiliary cutting blade D are used is illustrated.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principle of operation of my invention together with apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
