Description

waited States .IOSEPI-I BEARDEN, OF BATH, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 94,698, datedScptcn'zber 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-MARKERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part 0f the same.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPn BEARDEN, of Bath, in the county of Mason, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oorn Markers and I do declare that 'the following is a true and accurate description.thereoi, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, and 'being a part of this specification, said drawings being a perspective view of the right side of' the machine, with the central markingfwheel elevated from the ground.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of corn-markers; and consists in the com bination and arrangement ofits several principal parts, which are two traction-wheels for marking the first and third rows, and a front central wheehhung in a movable frame, for marking the second row.
In the drawings- A represents an axle of such vehicle, the tractionwheels B ot' which, revolving on either end thereof, will sinkinto and niark the tirst and third rows in the ground, into which rows corn is to be planted or sown.
C are the hounds, attached to the front of the axle; between them a frame,l D, is pivot-ed.
-In this frame a third lor central marking-wheel, E, is journalled, for the purpose of marking the second or i 'intervening row in the ground. As it would hinder the turning 0f the machine at the end of the eld, it is lifted up by a lever, F, (whosefnlcrum is the standard f,) by the driver when necessary.
The front end of the lever is connected t0 that of the frame D by a chain, d.
The frame is held in its elevated position by placing the long` end of the lever under a hook, a', at the side ofthe drivers seat.
By means oi' this device I am enabled to mark three rows at once. Its operation will readily be perceived on reference to the drawing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire lto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement Vof the central wheel E, pivoted upon the frame D, and adjustable vertically by means of the standard f, the lever F, and the chain d, and secured in an elevated position bythe hook ain combination with the arrangement of the wheels B, the axle A, the hounds I, and the drivers seat, when constructed and operating as aforesaid.
JOSEPH BEARDEN.
