GEORGE WHARTON, OF JERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS. Leners Patent No. 88,998, dated 11p/rc 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-FLOWS.
*uw The Schedule referred to in these Lette-rs Patent and making part; of the sessie` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WHARTON, of Jerseyville, in the countyof Jersey, and State of Illinois, have invented newand useful Im provementsin Gang-Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to th letters of referen'ce marked thereon.
. This invention consists in an improved arrangement for raising the plows of that class of utensils denominated gang-plows, and to this end, certain details of construction are employed, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention; and
Figure 2, a plan view of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A A. represent the side-beams of a gangplow, hav Iing my invention attached; and
B B, the ,plow-standards, which, as they constitute no part of my invention, need not be particularly described.
To the forward ends of the beams A A is pivoted, by means of the arms a a, the axle, a', which has a free swinging-motion thereon.
G represents an arm, rigidly attached to the beam A, further secured by the brace c.
To the arm O is pivotcd the lever c', the forward end of which is pivoted to the connecting-link D, and its rear end provided with the foot-plate d and catch E.
The lever c is attached to the tongue d, by means of the connecting-link D.
The operation of my machine is as follows:
. The tongue d, being conned, by its attachment, to
the team, when it is desired to raise the'plows, the driver places his foot upon the plate d', and, by his weight, depresses the same to a level with the.axle, with which the hook engages, and holds the same in position. This operation also depresses the forward end of the beams A A', the axle acting as a fulcrum, and correspondingly elevates the'rear end of the same, to which the plows are attached.
In order to lower the .plows, the catch E is disengaged from the axle, by pressing against the part which projects above the lever d, which frees the lever, and allows the beamsk to resume their former position. y
It will be readily seen that this construction is one of great cheapness, simplicity strength, and ease of operation. The power obtained by the system of 1everage employed being ample, and the weight of the mechanism, in-a measure, balanced on the axle a', the strain on the draught-animals is greatly diminished.
Having-thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lis- The parts described, consisting substantially of the lever c', arm 0,'1ink D, and catch E, when arranged land operating substantially asv described and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and' witnessed, this 22d day of January, 1869. l
GEO. WHABTON. Witnesses:
