Letters Patent 'Nd 94,659, dated September 7, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-MEASURER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom tt may concern.-
Beit known that we, J oHN W. SMITH and HEINRICH GnlnsA, ot' North Cohoctou, in the county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented a new and im proved Grrain-Measurer; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, uiakinga partof this specification, in which- Figure lis a sectional view, as indicated by the line :zz-:c of iig. 3.
Figure 2 isa side elevation.
Figure 3 is a top view.
Like letters in thev different figures of the drawings indicate like parts. p
Our invention `consists of a. box of the proper size for measuring grain, supported on movable 1egs,iu serted in sockets, so that the legs canbe withdrawn and the box rested on the floor. if desired, the box be'- iug constructed on tbe inside with pieces sloping to an opening in the bottom corner thereof, and having h ooks on the outside around the opening, for holding a sack or bag, the opening being closed by a slide workedby a lever on` the side of the box, so that, as the grain is measured and the slide withdrawn, it passes through the opening into the bag.
The box is also provided, on the top, .with a strike,
attached to side pieces having grooves working ou tongues on the sides of the box, the side pieces holding the grain over and above themeasure while being struck oii, so that it will pass back into the bin witbout dropping on the floor.
The box is also provided with buttons or stops, to keep the strike from coming oii, and also with hooks, so that the box can be hooked to the sides ofthe bin, or when too high, to a piece nailed thereon. The box being all of wood except the hooks, and simple in oonstruction, is such that every farmer can make his own measure, and that it will require less labor to measure the grain, as ordinarily, it takes two men to measure and vbag it-one to measure and the other to hold the bag while it is being put iu, but with this, one man can attend to it.
We construct our measure as follows:
A is the box, having a square opening, B, in the bottom corner thereof, of a suiiicient size to admit of the month ofthe bag closing the same.
Around this opening on the bottom of the box, are
nailed or screwed pieces a, having hooks b, to which the sack or bag C is fastened.
The 'box has two pieces, D and E, on the inside, sloping from near the top thereof' to the opening, so as to pass the grain to and through it int-o the bag.
The box rests upon three legs (F F F) only, of a l ro'or ionae leien an s z la gt z. c p p t t l l t, dso nl uned ts notto ome on the corners 0i' the bug, or on one ofthe sides thereof, but so to be out ofthe way of the bag, and not come against the bin when the box is connected therewith.
The legs-are inserted in sockets c o c, and can be removed at any time, so that the box or Vmeasure may be used on the door or ground.
G is the slide, having tongued edges fitting and working in grooves in the bottom of the box, and havingalso a lever d, for working the slide, the lever projecting through a slot in an arm, c, attached to the side of the box, the arm serving as a fulcrum for the lever to work on.
H is the strike attached to the side pieces f j, having grooves fitting tongue pieces secured next to the top edges of the box, and prevented from coming off by the stops or buttons g g.
K K are the hooks by which .the box' may be fastened to the top of the bin, as herein described.
Operation.
The opening being closed by the slide, the grain is shovelled into the box from the bin, and when full, the strikeis moved across the top and the quantity over the measure is passed back into the bin withoutbeing wasted or dropped on to the door, by the sides of the strike holding the grain until it` reaches the edge of the box.
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The strike H, with sides f f and buttons or stops g g, in combination with" the box or measure, constructed substantially as described.
2. The box A, with opening B, and hooks b, to hold the bug, slide G, and level' d, socket-s c c c, with legs F F F, constructed and arranged substantially as described. HEINRICH GRIESA.
Witnesses: JOHN W. SMITH.
