Description
aan. sa- W percepita LOYAL M. DoDD'RiDGE, HENRY REITENOUR, AND JACOBB. swHinR,` i 1 or NEW MoUNT'PLEAsANnINDIANA.
Lc'ttes .Patent No. 89,7 42, Vdated Maly 4., 1869.
`rnrpnoviauvxnnrr 1N coRN-DRQPPER The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part: ofthe same. t
To all lwhom 'it l y Be 'it known that we, LoYAgL M'DODDRIDGE, HENRY RErrENoUn, and J Aeon B. Swnmn, of New Mount Pleasant,` in the county of Jay, `and State of indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'Corn- Droppers; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull,fclear, and exact description-of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making part of this speciiication, in-which Figure l is a side elevation 'of our improveddevice;
` Figure 2, avertical central section of the same, showing the arrangement of the parts; H
Figure 3, a ,perspective view, showing the construction of the lower endof the main vbar of the device, .with the aperture, through which the grain passes, and alsothe device forspreading such `grain as it passes such aperture; and i 4 'Figure 4, a perspective view, showing the spring and spring-plate, which are attached to the lower end of the device, vand control the iinal delivery of the grain. Corresponding letters referto corresponding parts in the several iigures. y
This invention relates to an improvement in that classiof machines denominated hand corn-droppers; and y A i `It'consists the parts of whichit is composed.' y
A, in the drawings, represents the seed-box, which is secured to the Vertical bar D, and which is provided with a co'ver, as shown in iig. 2, r This box is contracted at its lower end and upon all of its sides, soas to form a discharge-aperture, at the centre thereof, for the dise charge of the corn intocylinder B.
B represents a cylinder, which is provided with a recess, or cavity, in its periphery, for the reception of a given number of kernels of corn, such cavity being made of the proper dimensions to receive the 'requisite-number of kernels `to be dropped in each hill, or said` cavity may b e of larger dimensions, and so arranged as only to bpen totheseed-box suiiiciently to receive the requisite number of seed, as shownl at Fig-A ure 5. This cylinder is arranged within the dischargeaperture C, directly underneath the .opening inV the Yseed-box A, so as .to receive the seeds from the latter and .deliver them into the formeri C represents thedelivery-tube. It is constructed of metal or of wood, and is of theform shown in fig. 1,
or' of any other suitable form, and is so arranged as to receive the grain from cylinder B, and conduct it .to the distributer b, in the lower end of D, shown in fig. 3.
D represents the plate or frame of the machine, to
` which the other parts4 are secured.4 This plate or frame is provided,at its upper end, with a'handle, which is adaptedfto the hand ofthe operator, and is u sed in moving and operating-the machine. To the lower end of this plate there is attached. a plate of metal, which extends for some distance below the lower end thereof,
`andwhch is sharpened at its lower end, for the ',pur-
in the combination and arrangement of pose of facilitating its entrance into theearth. Just at that point where the grain passes through this plate or frame from the discharge-aperture C, there is formed .an A-shaped projection, as `at-cl in lig. 3, which proof the grain, so that as it passes down the apertures formed upon either side of this projection,- the same shall be properly spread in the hill. E represents a spring-plate, which is secured to thel frame D, orto the'plate upon the lower end thereof', and is so arranged that its lower end comes in contact with such plate ,or frame, and enters the earth there"- with. v
`'.lothe back or inside of this spring-plate, there is secured a spring, as shown at c in iig. 4, which operates to keep the lower end of said plate inV contact with the frame D, or the plate attached thereto, as
Vtheir original positions, after they have been turned 'or moved for the purpose of dropping the grain.
crankG, for the purpose of communicatingthe mo-` tion of such crank to said arm and spring-plate.-
Gr represents a bell-crank, which is secured to a stud arm of this crank is attached the connecting-rod H, which extends therefrom to the cylinder B, while to` `its `upper armsV isattached the rod I.
H represents a rod, which connects crank Gr-with that when the other arm of said crank is, raised,`the cylinder will be rotated sufficiently to allow any seed which may bedeposited in the cavity formed therein to' be deliveredinto conductor O.'
nects with 'crank G. Y
lt will be observed that the 'arrangementof the above-described parts is suchlthat if the hand of the operator is placed vwithin the handle, the'instr'ument may be thrust into the earth at anypoint where .he
may desire to drop or plant a hill.
tion will leave a cavity which will be suitable for the when about to withdraw the instrument from such i cayity, seizes the handle upon rod I, and pulls it upthe same time .the spring-plate will be forced outward,
and thus the seed will` be properly adjusted in the ground at any depth which may be desirable. i
' Having thus described ourvinvention,
Whatwe. claim, and desire to secure by 1. The combination 'ofthe eyndei nemer e, seed j ection is designed as a further distributer, orspreader above described, and also to return the other partsto lF represents a connecting-rod, which extends from anarm, a, which is secured to the plate E, up to the upon the back side of frame or plate D. To the lower cylinder B, to which it is attached in such manner,
I represents a' rod, which extends from the handle v upon the upper end of frame o r plate D, to, and con' K represents a handle upon the upper end of rod I.
It will be apparent that the above-described operar i reception of the'seeds; andalso that if the operator,
ward, the cylinder B will be turned soas to allow the grain in its cavity to` pass down into the earth, and at Letters Pate box A, and delivery-passage G, substantiallyas shown B, for the purpose of moving the same, substantially and described. as shown and described.
2. The combination of the seed-scattercr b, spring In testimony whereof, We have signed our names to c, spring-plate E, and plate or fra-me D, substantially this specification, in'the presence of two subscribing as and for the purpose set forth. Witnesses.
, 3. The combination of the spring-plate E, spring o, LOYAL M. DODDRIDGE. and frame or plate D, substantially as and for the pur- HENRY REITENOUR. pose set forth. Witnesses: JACOB B. SWHIER.
4. The arrangement of the spring-plate E, spring c', JAMES N. TEMPLER, bell-crank G, rods H and F, with reference to cylinder J EREMIAH. L. MANLEY.
