SCALP-SPRAYER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18, 1910.
Application filed August 3, 1909. 7 Serial No. 511,052.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. DE VILBIss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certainnew and useful Scalp-Sprayer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for spraying or supplying a hair tonic to the scalp without necessitating the taking down of the hair or the disarranging of the same; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character, which is of improved and simplified construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and highly efficient in its operation, whereby to increase its practicability and commercial value.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation of my device with portions thereof in section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a bottle or vessel of any suitable form for containing the liquid to be applied to the scalp, the neck of which carries a ferrule or other suitable member 2, which combines with a plug 3 to close the bottle neck. The member 2 is shown as being provided with a flaring or funnel shaped mouth, and the plug 3 screws into such member, and has an annular shoulder 4 at its top which coacts with the flared mouth of the member 2 to form a tight joint therewith. The flaring of the mouth of the member 2 very materially facilitates a pouring of liquids into the bottle.
A discharge-tube 5 for the liquid passes through the plug 3 and has one end extended down into the bottle and terminating near the bottom thereof and its other end extended for a considerable distance beyond the plug and curved, as at 6, to fit the contour of the head. The outer end of the tube 5 is closed by a plug 7, which screws into the end of the tube to facilitate a removal thereof for the purpose of cleaning the tube, and has its head of conical form to enable it to be easily forced through the hair. The concaved side of the curved portion 6 of the tube is provided near its outer end with a plurality of radial perforations 8, which are arranged longitudinally of the tube and provide fine discharge orifices for the liquid. The plug 3 also carries an air-supply tube 9, which has its inner end extended down into the bottle close to one side of the tube 5 and terminating substantially at or near the center of such bottle, whereby an escape of the liquid contents of the bottle through the air-tube 9 is prevented when the bottle is inverted due to the inner end of the same being disposed above the liquid in whatever position the bottle may be placed. This is quite an important feature as it enables the instrument to be packed without removing the liquid contents and without danger of spilling the same. The outer end of the tube 9 connects with or carries an air-bulb 10 or other suitable means of air-supply.
In using my improved instrument the outer end of the tube 5 is inserted into the hair close to the scalp, and the bulb 10 then pressed to force air into the bottle to effect a discharge of liquid through the tube 5 and orifices 8 onto the scalp. The tube 5 is of suflicient length to reach under the hair to any desired position.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A scalp sprayer consisting of a bottle, a ferrule fitted to the neck of said bottle and having its outer end flared in funnel shape, a plu threaded into the outer end portion of sai ferrule and having a shoulder adapted to coact with the flared portion thereof to form a close joint therewith, a liquid discharge tube projected through said plug and 10 of the bottle, and a bulb attached to the outer end of said air tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
THOMAS A. DE VILBISS.
