CLOSURB FOR BOTTLES AND LIKE CONTAINERS Filed March 21, 1935 Patented Apr. 7, 1936 UNlTED STATES CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES, AND LIKE CONTAINERS Serafino de Faveri, London, England, assignor to Monocap Limited, London, England Application March 21, 1935, Serial No. 12,284 In Great Britain March 13, 1934 7 Claims. (01. 215-43) This invention relates to closures for bottles and like containers.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved closure of this kind which is particular 5 1y suitable for containing volatile liquids such as perfumes.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved closure of the kind set forth which permits the contents of the bottle or other com tainer to be sprinkled without removing the closure from the container.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a cross-section of one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View of Figure 1 with a portion removed.
Figure 3 is a cross section of a second embodiment of the invention.
The closure illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 com prises a tubular member 6, open at both ends and adapted to be fixed upon the neck of a bottle or like container.
This tubular member 6, which is shown in plan view in Figure 2, comprises intermediate between its ends a transverse partition or wall ,1 which is formed or mounted firmly in place in the tube 6. At its centre this partition carries a solid nozzle or projection 8 extending outwardly from the bottle and in the annular space around this projection'the partition comprises orifices 9 through which the contents of the bottle can pass out.
Upon the outer end of the tubular member is mounted a cap l having a central hole I I adapted to engage relatively closely over the free end of the said projection, this cap comprising an external screw thread engaging with an internal thread on the tubular member.
The said projection 8 extends beyond the outer end of the tubular member 6 and comprises, at a point along its length which is preferably level with the outer end of the tube, a fiat surface I2 situated in a plane substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the bottle, the outer end of the tubular member comprising a similar flat surface l3. Beyond the said fiat surface on the projection, the latter may have any suitable shape, for example conical or cylindrical, and it may, for example, be in the form of a cone of gradually increasing taper from tip to root.
Upon the underside of the cap are formed corresponding concentric fiat surfaces l4 and I surfaces l2 and I3 on the tubular member 6 when the cap I0 is screwed down.
For this purpose the cap it! is made with a central bore of sufiicient length to extend over the conical or other shaped end of the projection 8, and at the inner end of this bore flat annular surfaces adapted to engage closely with'the corresponding fiat surfaces on the projection and tubular member when the cap is screwed down, these flat annular surfaces on the under side of the cap being separated from one another by an axially extending flange It carrying an external screw thread and adapted to enter into the annular space formed between the tubular member and the projection.
In order to obtain a tight joint under all conditions of use, packing rings are inserted between the coacting fiat surfaces, these rings being made, for example, of cork or other suitable material.
' The bore in the cap may be arranged to fit closely over the projection but preferably it will be shaped so that it forms an annular space between the bore and. the projection except at or near its outer end, where it will fit fairly closely upon the free end of the projection.
In order to protect the contents of the bottle from falsification before use, a diaphragm I! of any suitable material may be fixed on the underside of the partition in the tubular member, this diaphragm being subsequently pierced in order to permit the contents to issue through the orifices.
It is to be understood that the above construction is only described by way of example. The external shape and configuration of the parts may vary from those described. The delivery orifices may be arranged diiferently provided they deliver into the annular space formed below the fiat sealing surfaces, and these surfaces themselves may, if necessary or advantageous, be made curved or inclined, and may be at different levels.
The projection may also be made detachable from the tubular member in order to facilitate refilling the bottle.
- In the modification shown in Figure 3 the central projection or nozzle is formed as a removable element and is held in place in the member 6 by means of a split elastic ring 18. In this embodiment also, the partition I is apertured centrally and communicates with outlet orifices formed in the projection 8.
I claim:
1. A closure for bottles and like containers comprising an internally screw-threaded tubular member and a centrally apertured cap having an axially extending flange screw-threaded externally to engage in said tubular member, an annular seating being formed on the said cap and co-opcrating with a corresponding seating formed on the end of the tubular member, a transverse partition dividing the tubular member into two portions, 3, pin or projection carried by said partition and arranged in spaced relationship With the internal walls of the tubular member, and ducts connecting the'two portions of the tubular member together, the said pin co-operating with the aperture in the said cap and carrying a seating co-operating with a further annular seating on the said cap.
2. A closure for bottles and like containers as claimed in claim 1, wherein the two seatings on the tubular member are situated in the same plane of cross section of the tubular member.
3. A closure as claimed in claim 1, wherein the central projection is formed upon the tubular member.
4. A closure as claimed in claim 1 wherein packing means are interposed between the said co-operating seatings.
5.oA closure as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said ducts are normally covered with a sealing diaphragm arranged within the tubular member and which has to be pierced to free the said ducts.
6. A closure for bottles and like containers, comprising a. tubular discharging member, a cap axially movable thereon, an axial bore through the said cap, a pin-like element located within the neck portion and having a part extending within and co-operating with the axial bore, two concentric seatings on the underside of the said cap, a further seating on the pin-like element co-operating therewith, and a seating on the end of the neck portion co-operating with the outer of the concentric seatings.
'7. A closure for bottles and like containers, comprising a tubular discharging member, a cap axially movable thereon, an axial bore through the said cap, a pin-like element located within the neck portion and having a part extending within and co-operating with the axial bore, two concentric annular seatings on the underside of the cap and an axially extending flange separating these seatings, a further seating on the tubular discharging member co-operating with the outer of said concentric seatings and a still further seating on the pin remote from the free end thereof co-operating with the inner of said concentric seatings.
