UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIo WILLIAM 1V1. BLACK AND ANTHONY P. MORRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LETTERING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM H. BLACK and ANTHONY P. MORRIS, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Lettering Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a lettering or printing device designed more particularly for the purpose of producing lettering or other characters upon maps, charts, and drawings, but capable of use in other relations as will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following description.
In many classes of work, particularly on maps, it is often desirable to produce a word or words upon a line which is other than straight, in order to follow approximately the configuration of other parts of the work, as, for example, in applying a name to a river.
One object therefore of the present invention is to produce a device whereby any clesired letters or characters may be easily, quickly, and accurately printed in any pre determined position and following any desired configuration.
Other objects of our invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It is to be under stood, however, that the construction shown and described has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely, and that the invention may be embodied in many other forms without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
In said drawings :--Figure 1 is a side and Fig. 2 an end elevation of the stamping device as a whole, when assembled for hand work for separate words or phrases. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the adjustable type pallet. For use in a printing chase for press work a form of pallet without outside projections is provided. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the position finder. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating one of the classes of work which the invention is designed to perform, and showing in dotted lines the relative positions of the stamping device and position finder when in use.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 524,091.
In the construction shown, the type pallet comprises a suitable frame 12 within which is located a flexible type holder preferably consisting of a pair of parallel strips 13 of resilient sheet material, such as spring steel, and having on their opposite inner faces a suitable friction material 14, such as rubber, for engaging and holding the type. The type holder may be bent to any desired configuration in or with respect to a surface parallel to or coincident with the surface to be printed or to receive the impression, and for the purpose of so adjusting the pallet,..and for holding the same in adjusted position, and also for forcing the strips 13 toward one another to engage and hold the type, adjusting means are provided and are herein shown as a plurality of screws 15 engaging in suitable threaded openings 21 in the walls of the frame 12 and engaging at their inner ends on the strips 13.
The walls of the frame 12 will preferably be provided with a relatively large number of openings 21 for the screws 15, whereby the strips 13 may be made to assume straight lines or substantially any other desired configuration in accordance with the requirements of the work. It will also be seen that the strips 13 may be separated by a greater or less distance to accommodate type of varying sizes.
For supporting, guiding and operating the type pallet any suitable devices may be employed. As shown mechanism is provided as follows. Mounted for vertical movements in a suitable frame 26, and preferably guided therein by lugs 17 entering slots 18 in feet 22 provided by said frame. is a pallet holder or carrier 19 to which the type pallet is secured, preferably in a removable and adjustable manner by the dovetail connection 20. For operating the pallet holder 19 and its attached pallet there is provided an actuator or plunger 16 Secured to said pallet holder 19 as by screws 24 pass ing through said slots 18. The frame 26 and plunger 16 are preferably normally separated by a spring 25 contained within a tubular extension 23 of said frime and a suitable recess in the handle 27 of said plunger. A number of type pallets of various sizes, and all adapted to be received by the pallet holder 19, may if desired be provided in order to adapt the device to different requirements of work.
For use in a printing chase for press work,
the pallet is modified so as to have no pro- 1 jections outside of the sides and is without a top.
It is desirable that, after having set up the desired lettering in the type pallet and adjusted the type holder 13, to its desired configuration, means be provided for properly locating the position in which this lettering will be stamped. To this end we have provided a position finder, the preferred construction of which is shown in Fig. t. This finder comprises a suitable number of relatively adjustable parts adapted respectively to engage a fixed portion of the stamp and an adjustable portion of the type holder. As shown the finder comprises a substantially U shaped frame having parallel arms 35, terminating in outwardly turned feet 28. Movably mounted on the arms 35, as by the sleeves 29, is a slide 30, a suitable set screw 81 being provided when necessary for securing said slide in adjusted position. Movably mounted on slide 30, as by sleeve controlled by a set screw 33, is a pointer 34;.
The position finder is used substantially as follows: The word or words having been set up in proper form in the pallet, the stamp is inverted and the feet -28 of the finder placed against the feet 22 of the stamp. The slide 30 and pointer 34. are then moved until the end of the pointer is placed against the bottom of any desired letter, when the set screws 31 and 33 are tightened. The finder is then laid upon the map or other work with the end of the pointer 3% at the point where this designated letter is to fall on the work, and with the line joining the feet 28 of the finder parallel to the position of the line which would join the bottoms of the extreme letters of the word. The stamp is then placed upright with its feet 22 against the feet of the finder. The finder is then removed and the imprint made.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character described, a flexible type holder adapted to assume different configurations or forms in a surface parallel to the surface to be printed, and means for retaining said type holder in any predetermined form.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a type holder, of means for adjusting the configuration or form of said type holder in a surface parallel to the surface to be printed.
3. In a device of the character described, in combination, a type holder comprising a pair of parallel strips of resilient material provided on their opposite, type-engaging faces with frictional material, and means for adjusting the configuration of said strips.
a. In a device of the character described, a type pallet comprising a frame, a type holder of adjustable configuration within said frame and consisting of a plurality of strips of flexible material, and means for varying the curvature of said strips.
In a device of the character described, a type pallet comprising a pair of substantially parallel strips adapted to receive type between them and means for forcing said strips toward one another and for adjusting the configuration or form of said strips.
(3. In a device of the character described, a type pallet comprising a frame, a type holder of adjustable curvature within said frame, and a plurality of adjusting devices mounted in said frame and engaging said type holder.
7. In a device of the character described, a type pallet comprising a frame, type holder of adjustable configuration within said frame, and consisting of a plurality of strips of flexible material, and a plurality of adjusting devices mounted in said frame and engaging said type holder for varying the curvature of said strips.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a type pallet including a type-holder adapted to assume different configurations or forms in a. surface pa *allel to the surface to be printed, of a movable carrier for said pallet, and means for guiding the movements of said carrier. 7
9. In a device of the charact described, the combination with a type holder of adjustable configuration and supporting and operating means for said holder, of a position finder for said device comprising relatively adjustable parts adapted to engage said type holder and said supporting and operating means, respectively.
10. The combination with a type stamp having a type holder of adjustable configuration, of a position finder comprising relatively adjustable parts adapted respectively to engage relatively fixed and adjustable portions of said stamp.
11. The combination with a type stamp having a type-holder of adjustable configuration, of a position finder comprising a pair of connected parallel arms adapted to engage said stamp, a slide movably mounted on said arms. and a pointer movably mounted on said slide and adapted to engage said adjustable type holder.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
