ALBERT I. ODELL, OF LIMA, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE ODELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
TICKET-PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
Application filed December 14, 1908. Serial No. 467,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. ODELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Ticket-Punch; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ticket-punches or the like and has particular reference to improvements on the construction of the punch described and claimed in United States Letters'Patent #565,364, 4, 1896.
The object of my invention is the provision of a slmple improved and highly efficient article of this character, which is cheap of manufacture and strong and durable in its construction, whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value thereof.
The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully granted to me August described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank fromwhich the female diecarrying member of the punch is formed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the female die is formed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the male member of the punch with the handle in longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a section on the line :10 0c of the blank shown in Fig. 2 with the same partially formed up and the female die in position, and Fig. 6 is a top view of the punch.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the female die-carrying member or body of the punch, 2 the male member thereof, and 3 the female die, which is carried by the memher 1.
The punch member or body 1 is formed in a single piece from sheet metal, the blank of which is stamped in the form shown in Fig. 2. This blank comprises a broad maprojects the tail-piece 4, which forms the handle 4 of said member, while the opposite end thereof is preferably scalloped, as shown at 5. The body portion of the blank is provided with the central longitudinally-extending elongated opening 6, the forward end of which is enlarged, preferably in heart-shape, as shown at 7. At each side of the opening 6 is a longitudinal slot or narrow opening 8, the forwardends of the outer walls of which are provided with countersunk seats 9 for the purpose hereinafter described. In shaping the blank to form the member 1 it is bent in U-shape along a central longitudinal line with the part 4 curved outwardly from the body to form the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, and the opening 6 is disposed on the back or loop portion thereof to provide an opening through which the male member 3 of the punch projects. The slots 8 also register transversely of the body to form the opening into which the ticket or other article to 'be punched is inserted, it of course being understood that when the blank is formed the webs 8 at the forward ends of such slots are cut away to open the forward end of the ticket receiving opening. The opposing walls 10 of the member 1 are firmly braced apart in parallel relation by the forward and rear spacing members 11 and 12, respectively, which have spurs secured within the respective openings 11, 11 and 12', 12 in said walls.
The female die 3 comprises an elongated strip of sheet metal of suitable width to fill the space between the opposing side walls 10 of the punch member 1 and is provided with a punch opening of any suitable shape, as at 18, and is formed on opposite sides of such opening with ears 14 for seating in the incuts or countersinks 9 in the outer walls of the slots 8, see Figs. 1, 3 and 5. The forward end of the die strip is bent to follow the lines of and to close the lower forward end portion of the body of the member 1, while its rear end portion extends rearwardly for a short distance flush with the lower side of the slots 8 and then bends downwardly and rearwardly with its end terminating flush with the walls 10 to form a chamber or pocket 15 for receiving the punchings to prevent them falling from the punch at each operation. The portion of the die-strip 3 disposed to the rear of the punch opening is provided with laterally projecting lugs 2 for fitting into registering openings 2 in the blank. The bottom of he chamber 15 is closed by a plate 16, which is pivoted its end to he bracepiece 1 by a screw 17, and has its forward end provided with a lug or finger-ices 18 to facilitate turning thereof on its pivot. The lower edges of the walls 10 are preferably slightly concaved, as shown at 19, to cause the plate 16 to bow when in closed position so as to frictionally resist a turning thereof.
The male member 2 of the punch has its nose 20 extending downwardly and fashioned to cooperate with the punch hole 13 in the female die 3 and its rear end extending downwardly and formed with the enlargement 21 to which the forward end of the handle 22 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured. The member 2 is positioned be tween the walls 10 of the member 1, with the forward end of its enlargement 21. pivoted thereto, as at- 23, and its body portion projected forward partially through the opening (3 and the nose 20 thereof working through the enlarged portion 7 of such opening, thus enabling the user to readily locate the point where it is desired to punch an article, as the enlarged end of the opening 6 forms a slight opening for such purpose. llt will be noted that the member 2 is pivoted to the member 1 below the slots 8, 8 in advance of the rear end thereof and notched as at 24, to prevent it from interfering with the rear end of such slot. The back of the member 2 is formed with a shoulder which coacts with the rear all opening 6 to limit the relative openg movements of the members 1 and 2.
The members 1 and 2 are normally retained in open position by a spring 26, which preferably comprises a spring wire one end of which is projected forwardly through an eye 27 in the rear end of the handle 22 and into a registering depression provided in advance of such eye, as at 28, thus forming a simple and very efficient means for holding the spring end to the handle. The eye 22 is formed by depressing a transverse strip of metal inwardly from the handle, shown. The spring 26 extends upwardly from the eye, describing the curve 29, thence forwardly to near the inner ends of the handles where it is coiled, as at 30, and has the end, which opposes the eye-engaging end thereof extending upwardly and slightly rearwardly from such coil and seating in a spot depression in the handle 4, as at 31.
lt-is thus apparent that I have provided a punch which is simple, and cheap of manufacture and has the major portion thereof, stamped from sheet metal, thus not only making it light of weight but preventing it from being easily broken by dropping or ot ierwise.
I desire it to be understood that my invention is not restr cted to any specific form or arr ement of pa 3 except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A punch of the class described, comprising a single piece sheet-metal body portion, which is U-shape in cross section and provided in its top or loop portion with an opening and in its side walls from the front ends thereof rearwardly with transverselyregistering slots, a metal strip secured between the walls of the body beneath the slots with its front end bent downwardly to close the lower forward end portion of the body, said strip having a punch opening, a male member pivoted between the walls of the body and projected upwardly through the opening in the loop portion of the body and having its nose fashioned to form a punch to cooperate with said punch opening, handles provided on the body and on the male member, and means normally maintaining said body and member in open position] 2. A punch of the class described, comprising a single piece sheet-metal'body portion, which is U shape in cross-section and provided in its loop :oortion with an opening and in its walls 1 th transversely registering ticket receiv' slots, a female die strip secured to the walls of the body immediately beneath the slot and having its ends bent to cooperate with the walls of the body to form a chamber beneath said slots, a part pivoted to the body and having its forward end working through the opening in the loop portion of the body and terminating in a punch, and operating means, substantially as described.
3. A punch of the class described, comprising a single-piece sheet-metal body and handle portion which i formed U-shape in cross-section and provided in its loop portion with an elongated opening 6 enlarged at its forward end and in its sic e walls with transversely-registeri slots 8. 8 which have tlleir front ends open to form a ticket receiving slot, said slots having their outer walls provided near tlielr forward ends with countersunk seats 5). a female-die strip secured between the walls of the body beneath slots 8, 8 and having ears seating in the countersinks 9 and its opposite end portions bent toward the open side of the body to cooperate with the walls thereof to form a chamber beneath the female-die, a plate closing the bottom of such chamber, a male member pivoted between the walls of the body and projecting forwardly through the opening 6 and having its forward end terminating in a male die and Working through the enlarged end of the opening 6, a handle attached to said member, and means acting on the handles to normally maintain the dies spaced.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence or" two subscrlbmg Witnesses.
