Be it known that 1, EDWARD POWELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, i and State of Pennsylvania, have invented, certain new an useful Improvements in Garters for Half-Hose, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a launderable garter which is permanently attached to a sock, and which must therefore always laundried with it. This is both sanitary and convenient.

To this end my invention consists of I00 of tape, or other textile fabric, with its end; permanently attached to the upper edge of the sock, without the em loyment of any part which may not be aundried with as much ease as the sock. The loop thus attached to the sock is somewhat larger than its to and in order that this loop when eneirc ing the limb of the wearer may be sufiiciently constructed to serve as a garter, a slide ring or constriction embraces both sides of the loop, and by its adjustment re ulates the tension of the garter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I, is a perspective view of a sock provided with a garter embodying my invention, illustrating the metho 0 its application. I Fig. II, is a similar view of a garter of a slightly differing construction. Fig. III, shows in enlargement the removable metal band which forms part of the construction illustrated in Fig. I. Fig. IV, shows in similar enlargement, the launderable double band which forms part of my invention as shown in Fig. II.

To the upper edge of the sock is attached the loop 1, of tape or ribbon or other suitable laundernble fabric or material. This loop is intentionally somewhat larger than is necessary to enable it to encircle the leg l of the wearer the excess allowing for the requisite adjustment.

In order to secure the l constriction of the garter provide, in the embodiment thereof shown in Fig. ll, u metal bond 3. which embraces both sides of l the loop and forms a sliding ring, which, by

To fix it in place a pivoted thumb latch 4, is fastened on one side of the band and when snapped in place holds the band in the place in which it is set. In this embodiment of my invention the band 3, is slipped oil the garter whenever the sock is to be laundried, and replaced upon another one, but the garter itself being fixedly attached to the ock is necessarily washed with it.

In Fig. II, I have shown the same garter, but in place of the metal band there is employed a fabric band 8, and this may be constructed of tape, somewhat similar in size to that of which the garter is formed. In this case the band is intended to be laundried with the garter. It should therefore be nonremovable, and to this end its sides are stitched together between the two sides of the garter which it encircles, this stitching serving the double purpose of preventing its removal and also rendering its hold upon the garter the firmer,so that when it is sipped up to the roper position to constrict the garter it holds its position without further pressure.

It will be observed that in both cases, the strap or loop of the garter is a permanent member of the sock to which it is attached not ordinarily to be removed therefrom and therefore necessarily laundried with the sock, a measure which tends to promote cleanliness.

\Vhile I have illustrated two convenient means which may be employed to constrict the garter, I desire that it be understood that my invention is not thus limited, but that 0t \cr means may be employed for this pur use.
