To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. VVEL,

RICH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which the following is a full,

' clear, and exact specification.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washboard proper. Fig. 2 1s a transverse section on line 11, F ig. l. Fig. 3 is a View showing a portion of a plain sheet of metal and illustrating one of the side. cuts in the sheet. Fig. 4 is a similar view. showingithe sheet folded or lapped at the adjacent edges of the cut.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the sheet of metal which is cut, stamped and rolled to constitute a rubbing surface and a shelf or ledge, top and leg holding tubes, For the purpose of providing means for roperly stamping thevsheet to produce the ateral flange or shelf 2, the vertical edges of the sheet 1 are cut as at 3, and the sheet of metalcrimped, whereby the lateral flange 2 is formed. In so forming the ledge 2 the portions of the sheet adjacent the cut-3 are lapped fora short distance, one upon the other as illustrated at 4, Fig. 3. The sheet is provided with the integral tubes or cylindrical rolls or heads 5, which tubes or cylindrical rolls are for the double purpose of giving rigidity to the washboard proper and at the same time providing means for connecting the legs 6 to the sheet constituting the washboard proper. It Will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to produce a washboard from a single sheet of metal having the rubbmg surface and also the necessary flange or shelf.

The legs 6 are inserted in the tubes or cylindrical rolls or heads 5 as illustrated in Fi 2 and held in proper relationship therewit by means of the nails 7 or their equivalents.

In forming a finished washboard from a plain sheet of metal substantially the following method' is carried outz'First, the sheet is cut and sized, second cutting slits in the edges of the sheet, third stamping the board, and fourth formin the tubes upon the vertical ed es upon the board. Howdesire to be confined to the exact method as just above pointed out as it'will be understood it may be varied without departing from my invention.

It will be understood that in order to provide a finished board the metal should e galvanized after it is formed, thereby closing the slits and producing a watertight sheet throughout its entire surface and providing a water-tight shelf at the top of the board. n

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is-

A washboard formed of'a single sheet of metal having its vertical edges slittcd, a shelf formed intermediate the top and bottom ends of the sheet of metal,:a roughened rubbin portion located below the shelf, said ru bing surface formed convex and integral cylindrical rolls or' beads -located upon vertical edges of the sheet, substantially asand for the purpose specified.
