AMBROSE 1. UPsori, on NEW YORK, 1r. Y., Asslenoe'ro WATERBURY BRASS 00M. PAN'Y, or WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 94,455, dated August 31, 1869.
IMPROVED TIN-COATED EYELET.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE I. UPSON, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eyelets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. This invention relates to improvements in eyelets, such as are used for eyeleting lacing-holes of shoes and garments, and for securing sheets of paper, and other like articles, and has for its object to provide eyelets which will not corrode.
These eyelets are made of brass, and either used without any extemaLcoating, or they are sometimes silvered; but the silver coating takes very thin, and soon wears ofl', or becomes scratched and mutilated, failing to protect the brass, which, by exposure to moisture and air, especially when used in shoes, very soon corrodes, eitber'when silver-coated or not.
My invention consistsin providing eyelets which will not corrode, by coating them with a heavy coating of tin, which, I find by experiment, takes on the eyelets much thicker and more, permanently than silver, and makes them much more durable, by reason of the greater protection from corrosion, while, at the same time, it provides quite as smooth and ornamental surfaces as when coated with silver.
I propose to apply the said tin-coating in a way well known and used in tinning pins; but it may be applied in any manner by-which it maybe donesmoot-hly and permanently.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, tinned noncorrosive eyelets, substantially as herein specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 10th day of July, 1869. v
' AMBROSE I. UPSON.
Witnesses S. H. \VALES, GEO. W. MABEE.
