Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. SIMPSON, OF BBIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SIMON STEVENS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-PROOF FABRICS.
Specification forming; part of Letters Patent No. 46,611, dated February 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. SIMPSON, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Water-Proof Fabric; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in applying to fabrics my improved compound, for which I have applied for Letters Patent, and coating the fabric thus prepared with flock or similar material.
To enable others skilled in the art to produce my improved water-proof flocked fabrics, I will proceed to fully describe my method of so doing.
I first spread upon the fabric one or more coats, as the nature of the material may require, (for thin goods, as silk or light cotton, two coats are snflicient; if for heavy cottons, canton-flannels, 850., three or more are better,) of my compound, for which I have applied for Letters Patent, as above stated, and fullydescribed in the specification accompanying said application. While the said compound IS in an adhesive state I apply the flock or similar material by sifting in excess upon the adhesive surface, then applying pressure thereto by rolling or otherwise, afterward removing the excess by'means ot a revolving brush. Other means of removing the excess may answer the same purpose. When this is done I hang the fabric in a room heated to about 270 Fahrenheit for twelve hours, more orless. Coming from the dryingor curing room myim proved fabrics are complete and finished, having the appearance of fine woolen goods or other known flocked fabrics.
I do not broadly claim producing water-proof flocked fabrics, as I am aware that such have before been produced; but
What I do claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- As a new article of manufacture, coating water-proof fabrics with flock, when the fabric is first prepared, in the manner herein set forth.
EDWIN L. SIMPSON.
